2021 Karaka Million Barrier Draw

The 2021 Karaka Million Barrier Draw held at Karaka Sales Centre. Connections are invited to personally draw their barrier for the $1 million DoubleTree by Hilton Karaka Million 2YO (1200m) and $1 million Karaka Million 3YO Classic races, to be held at Ellerslie on Saturday 23 January.

Mark Chittick and David Ellis on Savabeel

Te Akau Principal David Ellis and Waikato Stud’s Mark Chittick chat all things Savabeel. The dynamic duo took the time to reflect on the prolific stallions career, siring five black-type performers for the powerhouse stable in the 2020-21 season alone. Savabeel has also produced elite Group One winners for Te Akau, headed by superstar mare #Probabeel and other star performers #CoolAzaBeel, #HallofFame, #SwordofOsman and #Embellish. He has now sired 109 Group winners to-date and his continuous success is pivotal to the New Zealand industry.

Road to Karaka 2021 - Westbury Stud

Westbury Stud has grown rapidly since it began in 2000 with the establishment of a state-of-the-art farm in Karaka. Westbury’s influence has grown equally fast, selling a number of high-class racehorses through its Karaka yearling drafts. #RuudAwakening was a $90,000 purchase in 2012 and became New Zealand’s champion two-year-old, winning the $1m Karaka Million 2YO (1200m) and the Group One Diamond Stakes (1200m). #SofiaRosa (NZ) cost $65,000 at the 2014 Select Sale and was New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year as a three-year-old, winning two Group races on home soil and later adding the Group One Australian Oaks (2400m) at Randwick. North Canterbury’s Beaufort Downs is a new player on the vendors scene but has already made an impact, selling horses for up to $200,000. An early standout graduate is Da Vinci Girl (NZ) (Zacinto), who has placed in three of her six starts to date, and contested the Group One New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1600m) at Riccarton in November. Inglewood was founded by Ken Austin in Ohoka in 1938. Austin’s great-grandson Gus Wigley is now at the helm of the family operation, which still operates at that same North Canterbury property. Established by Libby and Sam Bleakley a decade ago, Highden Park has quickly made its presence felt at Karaka. In 2014, among just their fourth yearling draft at Karaka, Highden offered Beauty Generation (NZ), who quickly became a legend of Hong Kong racing, winning eight Group One races and scoring an all-time Hong Kong record HK$108 million in stakes (NZ$21.18 million). Other star graduates of Highden Park yearling drafts include Toffee Tongue (NZ), Harlow Gold (NZ) Kinane (NZ) and Milseain (NZ). We paid a visit to the Manawatu hills and chatted with Libby who is excited about their Karaka 2021 draft.
