2005 Ready to Run Sale Summary

16 November 2005

The General Session concluded New Zealand Bloodstock's Ready to Run Sale of two year olds with the buying trend seen on Day One continuing at Karaka today.

There was demand throughout both the General and Select Sessions for quality horses and they were commanding good money, but buyers remained discerning in their selections resulting in figures taking a dip on last year.

With a total of 206 horses sold over the past two days, total revenue was NZ$8,952,000, down from NZ$9,566,000 for eight more lots sold last year. The overall Sale average was NZ$43,456, down from NZ$44,701. The clearance rate fluctuated over the course of the day but settled a fraction down on the previous day at 63.2%.

New Zealand Bloodstock Marketing & PR Manager, Petrea Vela summed up, "Demand was still keen today for quality stock. We were pleased with the depth of the buying bench, with many buyers aware of the success that graduates of this Sale have achieved."

"The resurgence of the Malaysian market was particularly pleasing and along with the Hong Kong and Korean buyers underpinned this Sale significantly. This can in part be attributed to the great success that New Zealand breds have been enjoying in those regions this season and is welcome reward for the considerable effort New Zealand Bloodstock has spent in developing these markets in recent years."

The Hong Kong buyers were a particularly strong presence at this year's Sale with 23 horses purchased for a total spend of NZ$2,061,500. Hong Kong agent Willie Leung was the leading buyer of the Sale with eight purchases for NZ$698,000, his highest priced lot purchased for NZ$160,000 on Day One. This was for Lot 124, a colt by Keeper from Eva's Belle. Hong Kong buyers Joseph Loong, Dan O'Donnell, Michael Chang, Danny Shum and others also featured on the buyers sheets.

For the second year there were significant buying groups from Korea who together purchased a total of 27 horses. Korean agent, Chang Sig Kim, bought 9 on behalf of the Gwacheon Racehorse Owners Association in Seoul and the Korean Racing Association bought 18 for Korea's new course at Busan.

Also very active were Singapore buyers, including James Tan and Danny Murphy, with 28 purchases and Malaysian buyers with 20 purchases. Macau buyers including trainer Tommy Cheung and agent Bruce Sherwin were also buying.

Australian buyers including John Morrissey, Tim Martin, Tim Stakemire and Bevan Laming accounted for a total of 33 horses.
