New Zealand Bloodstock's 10th anniversary at the helm of the National Yearling Sales Series at Karaka has marked significant growth to the New Zealand industry over the past ten years. In 1997, New Zealand Bloodstock's first year conducting the National Yearling Sales following the purchase by Peter and Philip Vela of Wrightson's Bloodstock Ltd, the Premier Sale average was NZ$60,258. In ten years, the final sale average across all three sales sessions is now in excess of that figure, at NZ$63,012.
The expectation leading into the Sale was that results were unlikely to exceed the record-breaking results of 2005. This was supported by general comment from buyers that the overall strength of the catalogue was down on previous years.
New Zealand Bloodstock General Manager, Andrew Seabrook, remarked, "New Zealand Bloodstock is acutely aware of the necessity to present the strongest catalogue possible and that in order to attract buyers from our leading markets, in particular from Australia, we need to stem the flow of our top yearlings to Australia.
"We are on the whole pleased with the outcome of this year's Sale, given that the quality of the catalogue presented was not as strong overall as previous years. Our aim is to address this as a matter of urgency and we will be canvassing breeders and vendors in the coming months to discuss these vital issues now facing our industry."
Buying Bench
The depth and strength to the buying bench thoughout the week at Karaka has been impressive, with buyers from New Zealand, Australia, England, Ireland, Hong Kong, Japan, Macau, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Malaysia.
It was the New Zealand buyers who came to the fore over the past week, with three of five leading individual buyers from New Zealand. The leading buyer was Te Akau Stud principal, David Ellis with 29 yearlings purchased for a total of NZ$7,090,000. This included the top Lot of the Sale, the Stravinsky colt at Lot 341 out of Australasian Oaks winner, Grand Echezeaux, for NZ$2.2m.
Trans-Tasman trainer, Graeme Rogerson also displayed his usual prominence ringside, with 42 yearlings bought across the three sales sessions, for NZ$5,066,500. His purchases included his pick of the Sale, the colt at Lot 461 by Zabeel out of Miss Power Bird, related to champion racehorse, Might and Power, and Hong Kong star, Lucky Owners.
Fifth buyer of the top five was New Zealand bloodstock agent, Paul Moroney, with 29 yearlings bought across the three sales, for a total of NZ$1,420,500.
Leading buyer from Australia was Kieran Moore Bloodstock with 11 yearlings purchased for a total of NZ$2,157,000. His top priced lot was bought for NZ$725,000 at Lot 343, a Redoute's Choice filly out of great Bouquet, offered by Ascot Farm.
Next leading Australian buyer was Robert Roulston who bought 12 yearlings for a total of NZ$1,692,500. These included a top price of NZ$450,000 for Lot 62 by Zabeel, out of Singalong. Other Australian buyers featuring in the top 20 overall buyers included David Hayes, John O'Shea, Tim Martin and Steve Brem.
Also increasing their firepower at Karaka this year were buyers from Japan, in particular Mr Katsumi Yoshida of Northern Farm in Hokkaido and Mr Okada of Big Red Farm. Last year Japanese buyers accounted for 5 yearlings to a total value of NZ$410,000, while this year Japanese buyers outlayed a total of NZ$1,723,500 for 16 yearlings. These included a top price of NZ$500,000 paid by Mr Yoshida for Lot 150, a colt by Rock of Gibraltar out of What Can I Say (Khozaam).
This year Chinese New Year precluded a number of Hong Kong buyers from attending Karaka in person, however Hong Kong buyers still accounted for a total of 58 yearlings for an aggregate of NZ$6,137,500 (up a fraction from 58 yearlings for $6,003,500 in 2005).
The top priced lot destined for Hong Kong was purchased by Gary Hennessay at Lot 211 for $500,000, a colt by No Excuse Needed from Beyond the Sunset. The colt from Pencarrow Stud's draft is a half-brother to exciting two year old in New Zealand, Don Garcia (by Danehill).
Once again New Zealand Bloodstock's International Sales Manager, John Cameron, assisted the Hong Kong Jockey Club to secure ten yearlings for the HKJC International Sale in December.
Sires
With New Zealand's resident super-sire Zabeel represented by 24 entries in the Premier Sale, it was no surprise that he lead the sires by aggregate with 21 sold for NZ$7,860,00.
On top of the tables by average was Arrowfield Stud's resident sire, Redoute's Choice, with three yearlings sold for an aggregate of NZ$1,445,000 and an average of NZ$481,667.
Vendors
Sir Patrick Hogan's Cambridge Stud was the leading vendor by aggregate for the 25th year, with 45 yearlings sold for NZ$8,504,000, with an average of NZ$188,978. Leading the vendor by average was Pencarrow Stud with 18 sold for an average of NZ4311,806.
