2010 Karaka Premier Sale Now Online

27 November 2009

The catalogue for New Zealand Bloodstock's 2010 Premier Yearling Sale is now available for viewing online.

Premier Yearling Sale

Featuring 483 of Australasia's finest yearlings, the Karaka Premier Sale will again form the first session of the New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale Series which will take place next year at Karaka from 1 - 8 February.

The statistics from the NZB Yearling Sale Series are the most resounding endorsement of why buyers should head to Karaka. Selling just 21% of yearlings at auction in Australasia in the past six years, a staggering 42% of the Group 1 winning yearling graduates in the past three seasons came from Karaka (55 Group 1 winners), proving the Kiwis are leading the way in offering the best chance to secure stakes performers at auction in Australasia.

Karaka's Premier Sale has contributed strongly to this success with eight individual Group 1 winners last season alone with Roman Emperor (AJC Derby), Fiumicino (BMW Stakes), Alamosa (Toorak), Black Mamba (John C Mabee Handicap), Linky Dink (TJ Smith Classic), Markus Maximus (WA Derby), Sight Winner (HKJC Champions Mile), and Swick (VRC Classic) all winning at the elite level.

In the new season Karaka Premier graduates have raised the bar even higher with four individual graduates claiming Group 1 races including Australasia's top rated three-year-old, So You Think.

So You Think wins the 2009 Group 1 Cox Plate - following on from Kiwi success in the race in 2008 and 2007.

As the winner of the 2009 Group 1 Cox Plate Stakes as a spring three-year-old in the second fastest time ever, So You Think gained recognition outside of his Australian top rankingwhen he was rated amongst the world's top 20 racehorses in 2009 by World Thoroughbred Rankings.

New Zealand's leading three-year-old Katie Lee is another Karaka Premier graduate and she made history by becoming the first filly ever to complete the NZB 1000 & NZ 2000 Guineas double in November for Graeme and Debbie Rogerson.

Further Group 1 wins fell the way of Karaka Premier graduates Allez Wonder (Toorak Handicap), and Efficient (Turnbull Stakes) during the Victorian Spring Carnival.

Karaka Premier 2010

For the first time, the Karaka Premier catalogue contains over 50% of yearlings who are either full/half-siblings to stakes winners or out of stakes winners. That makes it, on paper at least, the strongest selection offered at Karaka which backs up the impressive success the NZ families have shown on the racetrack.

Premier Sale Overview:

  • 36 half or full siblings to Group 1 winners.
  • 19 out of Group 1 winners
  • 29% half or full siblings to stakes winners
  • 22% out of stakes winners

With Australasian broodmare owners less mobile in terms of stallion choice in the EI affected 2006 season when this crop of yearlings was conceived, buyers will be pleased to find the usual depth of sires has remained intact in this year's catalogue.

Over 65 sires will be represented at Karaka Premier with every leading sire of yearlings in Australasia represented, plus a couple of top European based sires who have bred to southern hemisphere time in Montjeu and Dansili.

New Zealand sire strength has been supplemented this season by a smart line-up of freshman sires who will debut at Karaka. Amongst them are four new local stallions represented at the Premier level in Darci Brahma, Fast n Famous, Lucky Unicorn, and Perfectly Ready.
