2013 Select Sale Concludes at Karaka
1 February 2013
With New Zealand Bloodstock’s Select Yearling Sale having provided 15 individual Group 1 winners in the past two seasons, a strong gathering of local and international buyers competed for the 611 horses on offer over the past three days.
At the Select Sale conclusion today at Karaka, a total of 399 of the 611 lots had been sold for $17,256,500 at an average of $43,249, a median of $35,000, and a clearance rate of 71%.
The top price early in the day was $120,000 paid by Albert Bosma’s Go Racing for the Pins colt at Lot 894 from Waikato Stud. Bosma’s Go Racing Syndicate won Sunday night’s Karaka Million with Ruud Awakening, and Bosma, together with business partner Pat Vinaccia and trainers Bruce and Stephen Marsh, were back in action this week.

“We have bought 10 horses so far and I would say that 50% of the shares in them are sold already,” commented Bosma. “We had a lot of clients ready to buy this year and the Karaka Million win meant we’ve had enquiries in addition to that and we have bought about four more horses than we had planned to.”
Bosma was very happy to have secured what he regarded as one of the picks of the Sale.
“He was the equal-top lot on type today, no question. There were two outstanding lots today but when you factor in his pedigree, Pins out of a Centaine mare, and that his half-sister (London Dream) won the Duoro Cup last weekend at Trentham, he stood out.
“I thought he had a bit more size to him than most Pins and he had a really good stretch to him when he walked.
“He’s a classic three-year-old, an ideal kiwi horse for an Australian Derby, and we’re leaving him in New Zealand for his two-year-old season with Stephen Marsh before he goes to Chris Waller in Sydney as a three-year-old.
“This is a fantastic value Sale and all of the horses I have bought so far I was prepared to go a bit further on.”
Later in the day, Lot 894’s price tag was eclipsed by Lot 1007, a colt by the freshman sire Swiss Ace (Secret Savings) from the five-time winning High Yield mare Ugly Betty. Offered by Westbury Stud, the colt was purchased by Tony Pike Bloodstock for $160,000 to be the top price for the day.

“He’s an early foal and looked a mature, running sort of horse and I thought he would make a nice two-year-old,” commented Pike.
“He’ll be entered for the Karaka Million and the intention is certainly to get him to the race but the horse will tell us if he’s ready.
“It’s been tough enough to buy the good colts at the Sale and there’s been plenty of competition on the nice horses.”
The $200,000 paid for Lot 533 on Wednesday was not exceeded, with the first season sire Thewayyouare providing the sale-topping colt secured by Hong Kong’s Magus Equine.
With a broad buying bench providing heated competition throughout the past three days, the leading buyer of the Select Sale has been Bryce & Ginger Tankard’s Waikato Bloodstock with seven yearlings purchased for $635,000 at an average of $90,714.
Waikato Bloodstock also made two bargain purchases in the Premier Sale, the Bernardini colt at Lot 5 for $20,000 and the Keeper colt from an unraced Zabeel mare for $40,000 at Lot 72.
Other prominent local buyers at this Sale have been Go Racing (9), David Ellis (7), Mulcaster Bloodstock (4), Paul Moroney Bloodstock (9), Bruce Perry Bloodstock (4), plus trainers Graeme Rogerson (8), Murray Baker (5), and Roger James (3).
Of the internationals present and active, John Foote has lead the charge with five purchases from the Select Sale for $415,000, with John Chalmers Bloodstock (9), Aquanita Racing (7), Stephen Gray (4) and Michael Freedman (2) also amongst the most prominent.
Of the $17 million turnover of the past three days, New Zealand buyers have accounted for the biggest spend, with 247 horses purchased for $9.3 million. Next was Australia, with a $3.5 million spend to add to its $25.2 million outlay at the Premier Sale.
Hong Kong has been well represented on the results sheets with a spend of $3.3 million, bringing the country’s total spend to $10 million for the week. Singapore and Macau have also contributed to the Select Sale turnover.
Windsor Park Stud’s sire Thorn Park has maintained his dominance at this session with a total of 12 entries now sold at an average of $65,333, including the top two prices of Day 2. Darci Brahma and O’Reilly have been only fractionally behind with averages of $63,750 and $62,625 respectively for the same number of horses sold.
The leading vendor by aggregate has been Windsor Park Stud with 30 Select Sale entries sold for $1,347,000 at an average of $44,900. That includes a top price of $140,000 paid yesterday for the Thorn Park colt at Lot 707. That brings the Stud’s tally for the week to 80 horses sold for $5,119,000.
The leading vendor by average has been Wayne Larsen’s Te Runga Stud with three of their eight entries sold for $225,000 at an average of $75,000. This included a top price of $120,000 paid for the Pentire colt at Lot 507.
