2022 National Weanling Sale Held at Karaka
16 March 2022
Entries for NZB’s dedicated weanling only sale are now open, set to be held as a physical sale at the Karaka Sales Centre on Friday 17 June.
Taking place in one centralised location, this year’s National Weanling Sale will provide another great opportunity for buyers to inspect and bid on horses.
NZB’s online bidding services will also be available, giving international buyers the chance to access a unique offering of quality weanlings and obtaining first-hand access to a number of New Zealand-based first season sires.
In light of the New Zealand government’s recent announcement, vaccinated Australians will also be able to attend a Karaka Sale for the first time since 2020 without requiring isolation.
NZB Managing Director Andrew Seabrook is looking forward to hosting another National Weanling Sale at Karaka.
“We have seen the weanling only sale format adopted well by our buyers since its inauguration in 2020.”
“Key metrics have continued to climb across the board and it tends to bring great participation by both international and domestic buyers, including a strong contingent of pinhookers.
“With the market and demand for our New Zealand stock being so strong, we are looking forward to selling more horses on behalf of our consignors,” he said.
A proven source of success, star NZB weanling graduates include prolific Group One winner in Australia, Sierra Sue (NZ) (Darci Brahma), a $2000 weanling purchase who recently won the acclaimed 2022 Group One A$750,000 Futurity Stakes (1400m).
Also featured is back-to-back Group One $220,000 Tarzino Trophy (1400m) winner Callsign Mav (NZ) (Atlante), a $3,000 weanling purchase and Jennifer Eccles (NZ) (Rip Van Winkle), who was crowned NZB Filly of the Year for 2019-20 and won $509,650 in career earnings – more than 101 times her $5,000 purchase price.
All weanlings offered through the National Weanling Sale at Karaka are eligible to be nominated for NZB’s lucrative Karaka Million Series. Graduates can compete for a share in the $1m DoubleTree by Hilton Karaka Million 2YO (1200m), followed by the $1m Karaka Million 3YO Classic (1600m) and $100,000 CollinsonForex Karaka Cup (2200m) for the reminder of their careers.
