Alagant Satin Wins the Eight Carat Classic
29 December 2008
In a wide open contest for valuable Filly of the Year points, it was three-year-old filly Alagant Satin who sealed the fifth leg of the prestigious New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year Series at Ellerslie on Boxing Day, in the Group 2 $125,000 Cambridge Stud Eight Carat Classic (1600).
Given a dream ride by Jason Jago, Alagant Satin (Al Akbar - Glowing Satin, by Noble Bijou) sat at the tail of the field before weaving her way up the Ellerslie rail, and diving at the line to secure victory by half a length. Second was the powerful finishing Shanzero (Danzero), while Lady Alberton (Golan), in a return to form, was a length away in third.
Amassing an additional eight points for her Group 2 win, the Murray and Bjorn Baker trained filly now sits in second place in the NZB Filly of the Year Series on fourteen points, just one point off current leader Daffodil (No Excuse Needed) at the half-way point in the ten-race Series.
In finishing second, Shanzero makes her debut on the Series leader board in fifth position on four points, while Lady Alberton sits seventh-equal with Glamorous Girl (Thorn Park) on two points.
Alagant Satin is nominated for the next leg in the Series, the Group 2 $125,000 New Zealand Bloodstock Royal Stakes on New Year's Day at Ellerslie where another eight points are up for the winner.
The following fillies with points in the Series are also nominated to contest the race:
Awesome Planet (7.5 points), Puttanesca (1.5 points), and Lady Alberton (2 points)
