Another Karaka Group One Graduate
28 December 2006
The win by Karaka graduate Mikki Street (Cape Cross x Ocean Pearl), in the Group 1 Zabeel Classic (2000m) at Ellerslie on Boxing Day, is a timely reminder of the value on offer at the upcoming New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sales Series.
Avoiding trouble down the middle of the track on the home straight, Mikki Street, ridden by Bruce Herd, won by three-quarters-of-a-length. Stablemates Sharvasti (Montjeu x Vedodara) and Fiscal Madness (Volksraad x Belle Nuite) filled the minor placings, only separated by a short head.
Awapuni trainer Lisa Latta secured Mikki Street at the 2003 Karaka Select Sale for NZ$61,000 from Haunui Farm's draft. Bred by Alistair and Carolyn Ring, the five-year-old's race record now boasts six wins and a prize-money haul of over NZ$260,000 for the syndicate of friends who race the gelding, John and Lynne Street, Kevin and Glenis Street and Graeme and Erin Blackburn.
A half-sister to the John Sargent-trained Fiscal Madness, by the Highview Stud sire, Align, will go up for sale on the first day of the Karaka Premier Sale as Lot 57. Also on offer are several relatives to Mikki Street, including Lot 894 a colt by Volksraad out of Pherozity to be sold at the Karaka Select Sale. Volksraad is currently lying third on the New Zealand General Sires Report.
Mikki Street's win represents the seventh Group 1 winner this season offered for Sale by New Zealand Bloodstock. The others being exciting Australian Spring performers, Efficient (Zabeel x Refused the Dance) and El Segundo (Pins x Palos Verdes), recent Hong Kong Mile victor, The Duke (Danehill x Mer du Sud), and local performers Jurys Out (Faltaat x Tarantia) Magic Cape (Magic Albert x Cape City) and Porotene Gem (Pins x Rubyfoo).
