9 December 2008

Big Profit (NZ) proved a timely reminder of the merits of the New Zealand graduates of the Hong Kong Jockey Club's International Sale with success in the HK$1.6 million International Sale December Challenge (1400m) at Sha Tin on Saturday.

Graduates from Australia, New Zealand, Europe and the USA contest the series which is designed to pit graduates of the Hong Kong International Sale against each other to fight for lucrative prize money and big bonuses of up to HK$1 million dollars. Big Profit (Howbaddouwantit - Fairdale Lass, by Centaine) also won the November leg of the series proving him to be the early standout of the international crop.

The Hong Kong International Sale set for December 13 this year features eleven New Zealand purchased two-year-olds in the thirty-two strong sale. Included are colts and geldings by O'Reilly, Stravinsky, Encosta De Lago, Keeper, Cape Cross, Faltaat, General Nediym, Exceed and Excel, and Ishiguru.

Big Profit was a NZ$160,000 purchase from the 2007 Karaka Premier Sale by the Hong Kong Jockey Club, from breeder and vendor, Fairdale Stud. He was later purchased by Mr. Yem Ming for HK$4.3 million at the 2007 Hong Kong International Sale and is now trained by Danny Shum, trainer of fellow International Sale graduate Scintillation (Danehill), winner of the Group 1 Hong Kong International Mile.

Big Profit's sire Howbaddouwantit will be represented by eleven yearlings at Karaka 2009. They include:

Lot 727 - B.C. Howbaddouwantit - Phaedra (Jetball) - Fairdale Stud

The first foal of six-time winning mare Phaedra, this colt is a three-quarter brother to Needuask-Ace and Aces (Sing.) (Howbaddouwantit), winner of the Group 2 Concorde Handicap and Group 1 placed in the ARC Railway Handicap.

Gerald Fell of Fairdale Stud describes their colt as "an early maturing type which is not indicative of the family. He is a good quality colt that is really built like a sprinter/miler". Phaedra has foaled another colt by Howbaddouwantit this season, and is safely back in foal to their successful stallion.
