Black-Type Bloodlines Flow Through Karaka 2022 Catalogues

New Zealand has a reputation far greater than its small size when it comes to breeding quality racehorses, and Karaka 2022 allows buyers to access those outstanding bloodlines that have earned accolades throughout the thoroughbred world.

The catalogues for the Book 1 and Book 2 sessions contain dozens of siblings to stakes winners, sons and daughters of stakes-winning mares, and members of influential families that have made their mark on feature races throughout New Zealand, Australia and further afield.

 

Siblings to the stars

Over 100 siblings to black-type winners are set to go through the Karaka sale ring, including 31 Group One winners.

There are nine siblings to Group One winners from just the last two seasons alone.

• The U S Navy Flag filly catalogued as Lot 116 is a half-sister to Inspirational Girl (NZ) (Reliable Man), who won the Group One Railway Stakes (1600m) in Perth in November of 2020.
• Lot 161 is a full-brother to the rising star Mo’unga (NZ) (Savabeel), winner of five of his 14 starts so far including last year’s Group One Rosehill Guineas (2000m) and Winx Stakes (1400m). The exciting four-year-old has also placed in the Group One Randwick Guineas (1600m), Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) and Mackinnon Stakes (2000m), with the promise of a whole lot more still to come.
• The 2020 Sydney Cup (3200m) winner Etah James (NZ) (Raise The Flag) is a half-sister to Lot 229.
• Lot 234 is a half-sister to Explosive Jack (NZ) (Jakkalberry), who claimed three Derby titles in an all-conquering three-year-old season, headed by last year’s Group One Australian Derby (2400m) at Randwick and South Australian Derby (2500m) at Morphettville.
• Lot 293 is a three-quarter-sister to the world’s highest-rated racemare, Verry Elleegant (NZ) (Zed). The Chris Waller-trained marvel is now a 10-time Group One winner, most recently a stunning demolition of her opposition in the Melbourne Cup (3200m) in November.
• Prima Park offers Lot 400, a Burgundy (NZ) filly who is a half-sister to the exceptional Entriviere (NZ) (Tavistock). The Jamie Richards-trained mare has won seven of her 12 starts, scoring at Group Two level in Sydney in the spring in the Sheraco Stakes (1200m) before stepping up to the big time in the Group One Sistema Railway (1200m) at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day.
• The Impending colt going through the ring as Lot 433 is a half-brother to On The Bubbles (Brazen Beau), who won last season’s $1m Karaka Million 2YO (1200m) and Group One Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m). This colt is also from the same family as the recent Listed Blue Diamond Preview (1000m) winner Daumier (Epaulette).
• Last season’s New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year Amarelinha (NZ) (Savabeel) is a three-quarter-sister to Lot 528. Amarelinha won five of her eight starts as a three-year-old, headed by dominant wins in the Group One New Zealand Oaks (2400m), Group Two Eight Carat Classic (1600m), Group Two David & Karyn Ellis Fillies’ Classic (2000m) and Group Three Sunline Vase (2100m).
• Lot 539 is a full-sister to the Group One Captain Cook Stakes (1600m) winner Rock On Wood (NZ) (Redwood).

The catalogues feature half-siblings to the last two winners of the $1m Karaka Million 2YO (1200m), with On The Bubbles’ half-brother catalogued as Lot 433 while Lot 929 is a half-brother to this year’s winner Dynastic (NZ) (Almanzor).

Other notables include Lot 108, who is a full-sister to the outstanding Te Akau Shark (NZ) (Rip Van Winkle). The chestnut gelding was an elite winner on both sides of the Tasman, scoring back-to-back triumphs in the Waikato Sprint (1400m) and Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m), and he placed in another three Group One races including the Cox Plate (2040m).

Multiple Group One winner and emerging sire Kermadec (NZ) (Teofilo) is a half-brother to Lot 306, a colt by Ribchester being offered by Wentwood Grange.

Lot 313 is a half-brother to four stakes winners headed by Bonneval (NZ) (Makfi), who was a two-time New Zealand Horse of the Year. Her seven wins included the Group One New Zealand Oaks (2400m), Australian Oaks (2400m) and Underwood Stakes (1800m). Lots 165, 352, 470, 471 and 605 also come from this prolific black-type family.

Triple Group One-winning sprinter (The) Bostonian (NZ) (Jimmy Choux) is a half-brother to Lot 345.

There are also siblings to Group One winners Miami Bound (NZ) (Reliable Man), Music Magnate (NZ) (Written Tycoon), Catalyst (NZ) (Darci Brahma), Hasahalo (NZ) (Savabeel), Ladies First (NZ) (Dylan Thomas), Consensus (NZ) (Postponed), Unforgotten (Fastnet Rock), Yourdeel (NZ) (Dundeel), Marky Mark (Makfi), Luna Rossa (NZ) (Written Tycoon), Signify (NZ) (Perfectly Ready), Jennifer Eccles (NZ) (Rip Van Winkle), Brambles (NZ) (Savabeel), Madison County (NZ) (Pins), Saint Emilion (NZ) (Mastercraftsman), Tavago (NZ) (Tavistock) and Stolen Dance (NZ) (Alamosa).

 

Stakes-winners’ sons and daughters

Karaka 2022 will showcase the progeny of 99 stakes-winning mares, including 10 who scored at the highest level.

• Lot 11 is a filly by I Am Invincible out of Thee Auld Floozie (NZ) (Mastercraftsman), who won 11 races including the Group One Thorndon Mile (1600m), two editions of the Group Two Westbury Classic (1400m) and two other stakes races. She was also a two-time placegetter at Group One level.
• The Satono Aladdin colt catalogued as Lot 40 is a son of Veloce Bella (NZ) (Volksraad), who scored a dozen wins including the Group One International Stakes (2000m) at Te Rapa.
• Lot 95 is a colt by Tarzino out of Arapaho Miss (Danehill Dancer), who won the Group One VRC Oaks (2500m).
• Group One New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1600m) winner Charmont (High Chaparral) is the dam of Lot 165.
• Pencarrow Stud will offer Lot 319, a filly by Dundeel (NZ) out of the Group One New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1600m) winner Insouciant (NZ) (Keeper).
• Lot 327 is a filly by prolific sire Deep Field out of Irish Fling (NZ) (Darci Brahma), who won the Group One Telegraph (1200m) at Trentham.
• A colt by superstar American Pharoah out of La Diosa (NZ) (So You Think) will go through the ring as Lot 360. La Diosa won the Group One New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1600m), then later added the Group Two (now Group One) Surround Stakes (1400m) in Sydney.
• Lot 500 is by Tarzino (NZ) out of Pondarosa Miss (NZ) (High Chaparral), who won the Group One Easter Handicap (1600m).
• Group One Avondale Cup (2200m) winner Sharvasti (NZ) (Montjeu) is the dam of Lot 571, a filly by Per Incanto

 

Famous families

There are also plenty of points of interest under the second, third and fourth dams of pedigree pages all the way through the Karaka 2022 catalogues.

• Book 1 features Lots 2, 90, 96, 133, 536, 544, 604 and 619, all tracing back to Riverlette (NZ) (Sir Godfrey), who features in the dam line of Group One stars Sixty Seconds (NZ) (Centaine), Arletty (NZ) (Centaine), Xtravagant (NZ) (Pentire), He’s Remarkable (NZ) (Pentire), Legs (NZ) (Pins), Guyno (NZ) (O’Reilly) and Tiptronic (NZ) (O’Reilly).
• Lots 24 and 379 are descendants of three-time New Zealand Broodmare of the Year Flying Floozie (NZ) (Pompeii Court) – the dam of champion racehorse and successful sire Starcraft (NZ) (Soviet Star), as well as fellow Group One winner Forum Floozie (NZ) (Danasinga). The family has continued to produce quality performers into more recent times, such as the Group One winner and Group One-placed Sports Illustrated (NZ) (Fast ‘N’ Famous).
• Lots 125, 126, 276 and 635 come from the family that has produced the likes of champion three-year-old Daffodil (NZ) (No Excuse Needed) and Group One winners Good Faith (NZ) (Straight Strike) and Aegon (NZ) (Sacred Falls), while Lot 135 descends from Glamour Puss (NZ) (Tale Of The Cat), who is the granddam of a couple of Australian Group Two stars of recent seasons in Acting (NZ) (Savabeel) and Forgot You (NZ) (Savabeel).

  

   

• Lots 176 and 383 are descendants of Iguazu’s Girl (NZ) (Redoute’s Choice), dam of triple Group One winner and high-class Waikato Stud sire Sacred Falls (NZ) (O’Reilly). Iguazu’s Girl is also a half-sister to the stakes winner and Group One-placed Splashing Out (NZ) (O’Reilly), who is the dam of three Group winners.
• Two Per Incanto yearlings, Lots 372 and 562, have Bling (NZ) (O’Reilly) as their third dams. Bling is the dam of Group One winners Diademe (NZ) (Savabeel) and Embellish (NZ) (Savabeel). Diademe herself is now the dam of stakes performers Unition (Fastnet Rock) and Conqueror (Fastnet Rock), while Embellish stands at Cambridge Stud with his first yearlings on offer at Karaka 2022. This family has also produced New Zealand’s champion sprinter of 2014-15, Sacred Star (Flying Spur).
• An emerging family in the Waikato Stud portfolio is the one represented by Lots 528 and 573. These two colts both have Jacqwin (Bluebird) in their dam lines. Herself a three-race winner, Jacqwin is the dam of Group One winner Metal Bender (NZ) (Danasinga) and granddam of recent big-race winners Amarelinha (NZ) (Savabeel) and Missybeel (NZ) (Savabeel). The family has also produced the super-talented Group One Golden Rose (1400m) placegetter North Pacific (Brazen Beau).

Meanwhile, Pencarrow Stud has been responsible for one of New Zealand’s standout families of the last few decades. Their stakes-winning mare Richebourg (NZ) (Vice Regal) has left an indelible mark through her remarkable daughters and their progeny.

She is the dam of Romanee Conti (NZ) (Sir Tristram), who performed up to the elite level in New Zealand, Australia and Hong Kong but is better known as the dam of legendary staying mare Ethereal (NZ) (Rhythm) – winner of the Caulfield Cup (2400m) and Melbourne Cup (3200m) in 2001. Ethereal herself has gone on to be dam or granddam of half a dozen stakes performers.

Another of Richebourg’s daughters is Grand Echezeaux (NZ) (Zabeel), who won the Group One Australasian Oaks (2000m) and is the dam of five-time Group One winner and leading sire Darci Brahma (NZ) (Danehill), along with multiple stakes winner and sire Burgundy (NZ) (Redoute’s Choice) and two other stakes performers.

A full-sister to Grand Echezeaux is Our Echezeaux (NZ) (Zabeel), dam of stakes winners Dolmabache (NZ) (Redoute’s Choice), Pure Elegance (NZ) (Redoute’s Choice) and Cote d’Or (NZ) (Makfi).

This incomparable family is represented in Book 1 of Karaka 2022 through Lots 183, 214, 217, 221, 475, 492, 595 and 596.

Cambridge Stud also has an extraordinary history of producing some of the finest female families, originally under Sir Patrick and Lady Hogan and now being taken into the future by Brendan and Jo Lindsay. No yearling sale at Karaka would be complete without those world-renowned Cambridge bloodlines, such as the My Tricia (NZ) (Hermes) family, which has produced the likes of Grosvenor (NZ) (Sir Tristram), Lankan Rupee (Redoute’s Choice), Lonhro (Octagonal), Niello (Octagonal), Catalyst (NZ) (Darci Brahma), Zurella (NZ) (Zabeel), La Sizeranne (NZ) (Stravinsky) and Tavago (NZ) (Tavistock).

Even more famous is the incomparable Eight Carat (Pieces Of Eight). A three-time New Zealand Broodmare of the Year and inducted into New Zealand’s Racing Hall of Fame, Eight Carat produced Group One winners Octagonal (NZ) (Zabeel), Mouawad (NZ) (Zabeel), Diamond Lover (Sticks And Stones), Marquise (NZ) (Gold And Ivory) and Kaapstad (NZ) (Sir Tristram).

Her daughters went on to produce the likes of Group One stars Tristalove (NZ) (Sir Tristram), Don Eduardo (NZ) (Zabeel), Shower Of Roses (NZ) (Zabeel), Danewin (Danehill) and Commands (Danehill), while subsequent generations feature the likes of Emerald Dream (Danehill), Shooting To Win (Northern Meteor), Deep Field (Northern Meteor), Verry Elleegant (NZ) (Zed), Viscount (Quest For Fame) and Jonker (Spirit Of Boom).

The My Tricia family features in Lots 128 and 626 in Book 1 of Karaka 2022, while those coveted traces of Eight Carat can be found in Lot 29, 100, 149, 171, 206 and 386.

But top-class bloodlines are not restricted to the North Island. Southland’s Dennis brothers have been breeding quality thoroughbreds for decades, perhaps most notably the multiple Group One winners The Phantom Chance (NZ) (Noble Bijou), The Phantom (NZ) (Noble Bijou) and The Jewel (NZ) (O’Reilly).

The family’s current pin-up performer is The Jewel’s high-class grandson The Chosen One (NZ) (Savabeel), who capped a long list of big-race placings on both sides of the Tasman with a sparkling victory in the Group One Thorndon Mile (1600m) at Trentham in late January.

Other Group One winners to come from these sensational bloodlines include La Diosa (NZ) (So You Think), The Twinkle (NZ) (Gate Keeper), Irish Chance (NZ) (Sir Tristram) and this season’s New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1600m) heroine The Perfect Pink (NZ) (Savabeel).

Close relatives to these star performers are set to go through the Karaka sale ring as Lots 10, 15 and 354.
