Black-Type Breakthrough for Wild Imagination (NZ)

10 February 2025

Prolific winner Wild Imagination (NZ) (Makfi) took her career to new heights with a first black-type victory in Saturday’s A$120,000 Listed Premier’s Plate (2000m) at Morphettville.

Wild Imagination was bought for $40,000 from Windsor Park Stud’s Book 1 draft at Karaka 2019. She has now had 45 starts for 12 wins, 15 placings and A$501,946 in prize-money.

The seven-year-old was ridden by apprentice jockey Alana Livesey on Saturday and led all the way, calling on all her fighting qualities when challenged in the straight and tenaciously holding out the chasers by just over half a length.

“She had a very suitable race today and she’s just so gutsy,” Livesey said. “She got in very well at the weights. She likes to roll forward and make her own luck, and we were able to do that.

“You know that she really picks up and fights back when they challenge her in the straight, and that’s exactly what she’s done today.

“No matter what her connections decide to do from here, she’s a very valuable mare now with that black type next to her name.”

Originally trained by Richard and Chantelle Jolly, Wild Imagination was sold to her new trainer and part-owner David Page before the start of her 2024-25 preparation.

She placed in only one of her first six starts for her new stable, but has found form in the last couple of months with wins in four of her last six appearances.

“She’s been a ripper,” Page said. “This is pretty exciting and definitely my biggest win as a trainer.

“Her form was probably not great in those first few starts after joining our stable, but I thought she was racing well. She’s settled in beautifully with us. She knows she’s a big deal, but we like that.

“I did think she’d be hard to beat today. It’s probably as confident as I’ve ever been in a horse. That’s just because of the way she pulled up from her last start and the way she’s been all week.

“She was actually asleep when we went to get her out of her yard this morning, sprawled out on the sand in the sun, so she was nice and relaxed. She looked as fit as I’ve seen her look since we’ve had her.”
