Bradman (NZ) Adds to Proud Family History
8 April 2024
Karaka graduate Bradman (NZ) (Pins) became the fourth stakes winner for incredible broodmare Baggy Green (Galileo) when he took out Saturday's $90,000 Listed Bramco Granite & Marble Flying Handicap (1400m) at Trentham.
Bought by trainer Roydon Bergerson for $85,000 from Book 1 of Karaka 2019, Bradman has recorded seven wins and 17 placings in his 44-start career, earning more than $225,000 for his big group of owners.
He is one of Baggy Green’s four winners from five foals to race, and all of those four have won at stakes level. Tofane (NZ) (Ocean Park) was a four-time Group One winner, No Compromise (NZ) (Pins) took out Sydney’s Group One Metropolitan Handicap (2400m), and Benaud (Reliable Man) has won at Listed level and was runner-up in the Group One Australian Derby (2400m) as a three-year-old.
The Flying Handicap was only the second start at stakes level for Bradman, who had finished a close sixth in last month’s Listed Lightning Handicap (1200m) at the same venue.
After settling in sixth place among a strung-out Flying Handicap field, jockey Wiremu Pinn brought Bradman to the outside at the home turn and moved him through his gears. He soon drew up alongside the leader Our Echo (NZ) (Echoes Of Heaven) and surged ahead, winning by three-quarters of a length.
“Roydon texted me last week and sounded bullish about this horse,” Pinn said. “I thought he was really well placed in this race with 53 kilograms, and he’s come out and won it very nicely in the end.
“I’ve won three times on him now, so we seem to get along well. His manners aren’t the best sometimes, so he’s probably not the easiest horse to train, but Roydon has done a great job with him. I think his manners are slowly getting a bit better. The horse is really maturing and there could be more to come with him in the future.”
