Classic-type Fillies on Agenda
9 November 2018
NZB’s Ready to Run Sale of Two-Year-Olds provides the perfect opportunity to invest in the next generation of fillies.
It’s not only the New Zealand colts and geldings taking top honours in Australasia’s coveted races, the fillies are stamping their mark too and in the past six seasons New Zealand sourced fillies have triumphed in 36% of all Australian Group One filly races.
They have reigned supreme in the last five consecutive Group One Australian Oaks with Unforgotten, Bonneval (NZ), Sofia Rosa (NZ), Gust of Wind (NZ) and Rising Romance (NZ) all displaying their immense staying power.
The Ready to Run Sale features 65 two-year-old fillies who will no doubt play a large roll in racetrack results and future breeding.
Several of Waikato Stud’s stallion roster will feature among the well-bred fillies. The breeding nursery’s Champion Sire Savabeel has sired many Group One-winning fillies including Queensland Oaks winner Scarlett Lady (NZ), New Zealand Oaks winners Savvy Coup (NZ) and Savaria (NZ), and New Zealand One Thousand Guineas winner Hasahalo (NZ).
He will be represented by several fillies at the Sale with prominent classic pedigrees including Diamond Lodge’s Lot 69 who is out of a winning Iffraaj mare and half-sister to Group One New Zealand Derby winner Helene Vitality (NZ)and Mapperley Stud’s Lot 393 who is out of a half-sister to Group One New Zealand Two Thousand Guineas winner and Ready to Run graduate Magic Cape (NZ).
A freshman at the Stud, Sacred Falls was the leading first season sire by aggregate at Karaka 2018 and will offer his first crop of two-year-olds in November, including fillies from the families of Group One classic winners. Riverrock Farm have consigned Lot 128 who is out of a half-sister to Group One Australasian Oaks winner Yelgun Dawn (NZ), Diamond Lodge will offer Lot 233 who is a direct descendant of Group One-winning Champion 2YO and 3YO Filly in New Zealand Phillipa Rush (NZ), and Ardsley Stud have a three-quarter sister to dual Group One winner Maco’reilly (NZ) whose second dam is Joint NZ Filly of the Year Plume (NZ).
The Stud’s young sire Ocean Park, who has sired Group One Oaks, Derby and Guineas placegetters, will be represented by Phoenix Park’s filly at Lot 190. She is a half-sister to two Group winners including Group Two Hawke’s Bay Guineas winner Antonio Lombardo (NZ).
Their late sire Pins has left Group One Oaks and Guineas-winning fillies in Katie Lee and Legs (NZ), and in November he will be represented by Cambridge Blue Agistment’s filly at Lot 81. She is from the same family as Hong Kong Horse of the Year and Hong Kong Derby winner Viva Pataca.
Adding some international flavour with stakes performers in both hemispheres, Westbury Stud shuttle sire Reliable Man will be represented by four fillies in November including Westbury Stud’s Lot 402 who is from the family of Group One VRC Oaks winner Richfield Lady (NZ) and Group One winner Captain Moonlight (NZ) who also placed in the New Zealand Derby.
International sires Iffraaj and Makfi will also have fillies at the Sale. Ainsley Downs have consigned the last horse to go through the ring (Lot 445) with an Iffraaj filly from the same family as Group One South Australian Derby winner Kushadasi. Kilgravin Lodge will offer Lot 216, a filly by Makfi, who is out of a half-sister to Group One New Zealand Oaks winner and New Zealand One Thousand Guineas runner up Keep the Peace (NZ).
Haunui Farm’s shuttle sire Iffraaj has sired several Group One classic winners including Ready to Run graduates Turn Me Loose (NZ) and Gingernuts (NZ), while Makfi, who now stands in Japan, has produced Group One Oaks winners Bonneval and Sofia Rosa.
Bonneval has been crowned New Zealand’s Horse of the Year for the last two consecutive years and was the first filly since 1990 to win the Group One New Zealand Oaks-Australian Oaks double.
Similarly, Sofia Rosa made her first Australian appearance with a victory in the Australian Oaks off the back of a second placing in the New Zealand Oaks.
