Danehill Mare Tops NZB Winter Mixed Bloodstock Sale
1 August 2014
Early fireworks provided the highlight at New Zealand Bloodstock’s Winter Mixed Bloodstock Sale when Lot 12 sold for $90,000, the top price of the Sale.

Young bloodstock agent Glen Harvey signed for the broodmare Markisa, a daughter of champion sire Danehill. Offered by Wentwood Grange, Markisa is out of Group 1 winner Marquise (Gold and Ivory) and is a half-sister to multiple Group 1 winner Shower of Roses (Zabeel). The mare’s second dam is the legendary producer Eight Carat (Pieces of Eight).
Offered in foal to five-time Group 1 winner Ocean Park, Markisa’s resulting foal, due in September, will be among the first crop for the exciting Waikato Stud sire.
The one purchase by Harvey was enough for him to be the day’s leading individual buyer and the mare is one that he is familiar with.
“We actually broke her in at home for the owners so we have always followed her progress,” commented Harvey. “She was a very talented racehorse and physically she’s such a strong, lovely mare.
“She has left quality foals that have all sold well at the sales and she’s had two that have made over half a million.
“I thought she was the best mare on pedigree and type in the Sale and I’m very pleased to have got her. She was purchased for Australian clients and she’ll foal in New Zealand before heading over to the Hunter Valley.”
Today’s top Lot was offered by Wentwood Grange who finished the Sale as the leading vendor by aggregate with 15 horses sold for $156,100. Te Akau Stud was the leading vendor by average (two or more sold) with 2 horses sold for an average of $21,500 and a total of $43,000.
With 31 more Lots catalogued than 2013, the average rose to $6,374 from $5,953, an increase of 7%. The median did not match last year’s strong price of $2,750, finishing at $1,750.
82 horses sold this year with the aggregate reaching $522,650, an increase of 11% from $470,300 in 2013.
The clearance rate rose steadily throughout the day to reach 72%, the slow start resulting in a decrease from last year’s 84%.
A good crowd gathered earlier in the day to view the 10 sires that attended the Karaka Stallion Parade. The quality of bloodstock was appreciated by the crowd at Karaka with some spectators purely coming to Karaka to inspect the sires.
The next sale on New Zealand Bloodstock’s calendar is the Ready to Run Sale with entries closing on Friday 15 August.
