Double Group 1 Joy For Nz Bloodstock Yearling Sales Graduates
28 March 2002
New Zealand Bloodstock Sales provided two impressive Group 1 wins on Saturday on both sides of the Tasman.
SIXTY SECONDS (NZ) and GROUT (NZ) were both purchased from New Zealand Bloodstock's National Yearling Sales and have earned themselves places in New Zealand Bloodstock's burgeoning Group 1 gallery.
On Golden Slipper Day at Rosehill on Saturday, Sixty Seconds (Centaine x Fifteen Reasons by Sound Reason) won the Gr.1 Arrowfield Stud Storm Queen Stakes in fine style, ahead of top class fillies, Hosannah and Quays. Sixty Seconds was purchased at the 1998 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale for $80,000 by John Haseler of Glenlogan Park, Qld from the draft of her breeders and vendors, Te Parae Stud, Masterton. Sixty Seconds was recently sold to Mr Gerald Leigh of the UK. It is understood Mr Leigh plans to continue racing this exciting filly from the stable of her current New Zealand (and now also Australian based trainer), Roger James.
Back in New Zealand, two year old gelding Grout (Gold Brose x Kaapstad Glamour by Kaapstad) won the Gr.1 Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes with an amazing turn of foot to edge out race favourite Danroad (Danehill x Strawberry Girl) with Pulitzer (Prized x Solveig's Song) filling third place.
Grout was purchased from the draft of Westbury Stud at the 2001 New Zealand Bloodstock Select Colts Sale for what now seems a bargain pricetag of $20,000 by his trainer Allan Sharrock, for his owners Messers NT & RH Stanley. Grout's win underlines what a sad loss to the industry Gold Brose's premature death was. Fittingly, as it turns out, Grout was bred by Rick Smith and Warren Pegg, with Smith having raced Gold Brose and also having kept a significant interest in him when he retired to stand at Westbury Stud.
The Gold Brose gelding's Group 1 win continues the incredible record of success for graduates of the Select Colts Sale since it's inception in 1998, with Grout being the 7th individual Group 1 winner out of the sale already.
