Eight Carat Classic Win For Spin 'N Grin

28 December 2004

New Zealand Bloodstock sale graduate Spin 'N Grin (Spinning World x Smile) added to her Filly of the Year points when she won the Group 2 Cambridge Stud Eight Carat Classic on Boxing Day.

The Mark Walker trained filly was purchased by David Ellis for $65,000 at the 2003 Premier Yearling Sale. With two points already on the board, following her placing in the Soliloquy Stakes in November, the filly now takes third position behind Justa Tad (Istidaad x Infinity) and La Sizeranne (Stravinsky x Tricia Ann).

Vamperalla (Kashani x Anchorbar) led for most of the race with jockey Lisa Allpress stretching the lead to five lengths as they entered the straight. However the filly could only hold on for a game second when Opie Bosson asked Spin 'N Grin to sprint and she showed a suitably impressive turn of foot.

La Sizeranne ran third collecting 2 points in the series and putting her within 6 points of the series leader.

The points on offer in the Group 2 race were 8 points for first, 4 points for second and 2 points for third. The current standings are:

Justa Tad 26

La Sizeranne 20

Spin 'N Grin 10

Eloa 8

Vamperalla 4

Julinsky Princess 3.5

Clean Sweep 3

Sheka 1.5

Sista 1.5

Volk Dancer 1

The next race in the series is the Group 2 New Zealand Bloodstock Royal Stakes on 3 January 2005 at Ellerslie. The 2000 metre event is worth $120,000.
