Eight NZB winners on Avondale's Premier Day

3 December 2009

The Avondale Jockey Club's feature day of the season yesterday saw a quality packed ten-race card assembled, including the Group 2 Avondale Cup and Group 2 Concorde Handicap, where New Zealand Bloodstock graduates performed with superiority in taking line honours in eight events.

Irish Colleen

The enthusiastic support of the thoroughbred industry by Daniel and Elias Nakhle was rewarded in part yesterday when their five-year-old mare Irish Colleen (Shink King x Fayette, by Grosvenor) out-sprinted her opposition to land the Group 2 Concorde Handicap (1200m).

Angled out towards the outside rail in the home straight by Andrew Calder, Irish Colleen nabbed the biggest victory of her career by a length and a quarter over Mallinson Road (Sandtrap) and Beautiful Girl (Black Minnaloushe), the three of them providing a Karaka trifecta in the contest.

Trained by Stephen McKee, Irish Colleen was an $8,500 weanling purchase by Daniel Nakhle at the 2005 NZB National Weanling Sale from Fayette Park Stud.

Now the winner of over $170,000, Irish Colleen is a daughter of seven time winner Fayette, with both descending directly from Australian Horse of the Year, Maybe Mahal, a winner of five Group 1 races including the Doncaster Handicap.

Ginga Dude's Half at Karaka 2010

Yesterday's Group 2 Avondale Cup winner Ginga Dude (Istadaad x Clatitude, by Clay Hero) has a half-sister by Mr. Nancho entered in the 2010 Karaka Select Sale under the consignment of JK Farm.

As Lot 914 the filly is set to sell early on the last day of the 'blue book', 5 February 2010, with her two-year-old half-brother by Handsome Ransom recently purchased for $82,500 by Dale Short at the NZB Ready to Run Sale in November.

Irish Jewel Jumps in Karaka Million Top Ten

Amongst the eight winners at Avondale for NZB was the ultra impressive Irish Jewel (Street Cry x Lowan Behold, by Umatilla) who jumped into fifth place in the current Karaka Million order of entry when she jumped, lead, and kicked clear in the La-Z-Boy Chair 2YO Handicap (1100m).

The filly looks set to give Sir Patrick Hogan another top chance in the 2010 $1,000,000 Karaka Million on 31 January after Katie Lee and The Heckler represented him in 2009, the latter winning the event.

Irish Jewel was purchased by her trainer Andrew Scott at the 2009 Karaka Select Sale for $125,000 from Twin Pines.

Her winning dam Lowan Behold was purchased in foal to Mr. Nancho for $2,400 at the September Karaka Spring Sale by Mark Brooks, who was clearly impressed by Irish Jewel when he broke her in earlier this year.
