Enhanced Pedigrees Available at Karaka 2022

4 March 2022

Lot 293 is a three-quarter sister to champion mare Verry Elleegant (NZ) (Zed).

Moving from January to March marks a major departure from tradition for Karaka 2022, but one advantage of the move is that it has allowed an entire summer of feature racing to deliver dozens of significant pedigree updates throughout the catalogues for both Book 1 and Book 2

Remarkably, there are 90 pedigree updates from Group One races that have been run since the catalogues went to print, including three siblings to recent Group One winners:

  • Lot 261 is a half-sister to Mascarpone (NZ) (Shooting To Win), who capped a series of Group One placings with a brilliant breakthrough in the Otaki WFA Classic (1600m) in late February. He also finished third in the Telegraph (1200m) and BCD Group Sprint (1400m) during a stellar spell of summer form. Lot 223 is also from the same family.
  • Lot 293 is a three-quarter sister to the champion Verry Elleegant (NZ) (Zed), who collected her 11th Group One triumph in the Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) at Randwick.
  • Lot 400 is a half-sister to the scintillating Entriviere (NZ) (Tavistock), who backed up her Sydney Group Two success in the spring with a first Group One triumph in Ellerslie’s Railway (1200m) on New Year’s Day. She also finished second in the BCD Group Sprint (1400m) at Te Rapa in February. Lot 380 is also a close relative.

Other Group One pedigree updates include:

2021 Zabeel Classic winner Triptronic (NZ).
  • Lot 2 is out of a sibling to the Zabeel Classic (2000m) winner Tiptronic (NZ) (O’Reilly), who is also from the family of Lots 536, 604 and 619
  • Lots 10, 354 and 360 all come from the blue-blooded family of recent Thorndon Mile (1600m) winner The Chosen One (NZ) (Savabeel) and New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1600m) heroine The Perfect Pink (NZ) (Savabeel).
  • Lot 161 is a full-brother to the super-talented dual Group One winner Mo’unga (NZ) (Savabeel), who kicked off a new campaign with a bold second in the Futurity Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield.
  • Lot 268 comes from the same family as the Hong Kong Sprint (1200m) hero Sky Field (Deep Field).
  • As well as being a half-brother to the proven Group One performer and recent Listed winner On The Bubbles (Brazen Beau), Lot 433 comes from the family of Godolphin’s recent Group One Blue Diamond (1200m) victor Daumier (Epaulette).
  • Lot 674 is closely related to one of this season’s leading three-year-old fillies in New Zealand, Belle En Rouge (NZ) (Burgundy). A close third in the Group One New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1600m) in November, she has since won the Group Two Eight Carat Classic (1600m) and Group Three Eulogy Stakes (1600m).
  • Lot 893 is a close relative of the superb Herbie Dyke Stakes (2000m) winner Coventina Bay (NZ) (Shamexpress). Lots 109, 494, 943 and 1006 also come from this family.

There are also dozens of pedigree updates from other feature races, including:

  • Lot 166, a half-sister to Group Three Hobart Cup (2400m) winner Ho Ho Khan (NZ) (Makfi).
2022 Group Two Waikato Guineas winner Field Of Gold.
  • Lot 245, closely related to the rising superstar sprinter Lost And Running (NZ) (Per Incanto), who scored a dominant first-up victory in the Group Three Southern Cross Stakes (1200m) at Randwick.
  • Lot 290, a half-sister to the Group Two Westbury Classic (1400m) winner Dragon Queen (NZ) (Sweynesse). The classy mare also recently placed in the Group Two Rich Hill Mile (1600m).
  • Lot 329, out of a sibling to Field Of Gold (Starspangledbanner), the all-the-way winner of the Group Two Waikato Guineas (2000m).
  • Lot 459 is a half-sister to Pareanui Bay (NZ) (Lonhro), the winner of the Listed Trevor & Corallie Eagle Memorial (1500m) and placegetter in the Group Two Wellington Guineas (1400m) and Listed Uncle Remus Stakes (1400m) since the catalogues went to print.
  • Lots 149, 386 and 920 come from the family of three notable recent black-type performers – Group Three Blue Diamond Preview (1000m) winner Miss Roseiano (Exceed And Excel), Listed Oaks Prelude (1600m) winner Miss Ella (NZ) (Savabeel) and Listed Gosford Guineas (1200m) runner-up Authentic Jewel (I Am Invincible).
  • Lot 647 is a close relative of unbeaten Australian two-year-old Best Of Bordeaux (Snitzel), who has scored bold front-running victories in the Group Two Silver Slipper (1100m) and Group Three Canonbury Stakes (1100m) in his only two career starts to date.
  • Lot 869 is a half-brother to Gypsy Goddess (NZ) (Tarzino), a spectacular winner of all of her four starts including Brisbane’s Group Three Grand Prix (2100m).
  • Lot 929 is a half-brother to Dynastic (NZ) (Almanzor), who lined up in the $1m Karaka Million 2YO (1200m) for only the second start of his career and delivered a breathtaking performance. He won by two and a quarter lengths and broke the race record, clocking 1:09.60.
  • Lot 1038’s half-sister Sassy Merlot (NZ) (Burgundy) has been a recent placegetter in the Group Two Wellington Guineas (1400m) and Group Three Desert Gold Stakes (1600m).

All lots entered in Karaka 2022 are eligible to be entered in NZB’s lucrative Karaka Million Series, where graduates can compete for a share in two $1 million features. Just ten short months after the yearlings make their sale ring debut, in 2023 they are eligible to compete in the lucrative $1 million DoubleTree by Hilton Karaka Million 2YO and in 2024 they will be able to contest the $1 million Karaka Million 3YO Classic, as well as the $110,000 CollinsonForex Karaka Cup for the duration of their career.

For the second year, buyers who are unable to physically attend the Sale will be able to participate via NZB’s user-friendly online bidding platform. Register to bid online here.

There are a host of New Zealand-based bloodstock agents who are on-hand to inspect yearlings on behalf of purchasers who cannot physically make it to Karaka this year and welcome buyers to get in contact with a member of NZB’s Bloodstock team should they require any inspection notes and evaluations.
