Freshman Sires at Karaka 2015

Karaka 2015 features 14 exciting young sires set to be represented in the Premier Sale by yearlings from their first southern hemisphere crops.

Cape Blanco Standing at Cambridge Stud

The selection covers both New Zealand and Australia residents during the 2012 season, among them are five shuttle sires that covered books in both the northern and southern hemispheres.

Amongst the line-up:

  • Cape Blanco (IRE) holds the largest draft of all the First Season Sires in the Premier catalogue with 32 Lots. Standing at Cambridge Stud, Cape Blanco’s first crop went through the NZB National Weanlings & Broodmare Sale in May 2014, including second-top Lot of the Sale which sold for $100,000.

  • Pour Moi (IRE) has the second largest draft in the Premier Sale with 18 Lots set to go under the hammer at Karaka 2015. The son of Champion sire Montjeu shuttled to Windsor Park Stud in 2012 now with his oldest progeny as yearlings in both hemispheres.

  • Dalghar (FR) was another stallion to shuttle to New Zealand in 2012. He commenced his stud duties in France with his oldest progeny in New Zealand now yearlings. Standing at Brighthill Stud he has three yearlings to be offered in Brighthill Stud’s Premier draft.

  • There are seven new Australian sires that have emerged in the Karaka Premier Sale including New Zealand-bred So You Think (NZ). The son of Champion Sire High Chaparral was bought for just NZ$110,000 from the Premier Sale, and went on to win 10 Group 1 races around the world. So You Think now stands at Coolmore Stud in Australia and has 7 yearlings entered in the Sales Series.

Lonhro x Hut (Danhill)

Premier: 1

A Group 1 winning juvenile by champion racehorse and sire Lohnro, Benfica carries the bloodlines of Australasia’s two most influential sires Zabeel, through his sire Lonhro, and Danehill, his damsire of his dam Hut.

Bullbars (AUS)

Elusive Quality x Accessories (Singspiel)

A Group 3 winning three-year-old, and Group 1 placed in the VRC Australian Guineas, Bullbars is a half-brother to Group 1 winners Helmet and Epaulette, both now standing at stud.

Galileo x Laurel Delight (Presidium)

Premier: 32         Select: 26             Festival: 4

Son of one of the most influential sires in the world currently in Galileo.  He enjoyed a stellar racing career, winning five Group 1 races in Ireland and America including the Irish Derby.

Dalghar (FR)

Anabaa x Daltawa (Miswaki) 

Premier: 3           Select: 9               Festival: 12

Group 3 winning sprinter/miler who won the Group 3 Longchamp Prix du Palais-Royal in France over 1400 in record time. By Anabaa, Dalghar is a half-brother to successful sires Daylami and Dalakhani.

Foxwedge (AUS)

Fastnet Rock x Forest Native (Forest Wildcat) 

Premier: 8          

A Group 1 winning sprinter as a three-year-old, and twice Group 1 placed, Foxwedge defeated a high class field of Australia’s best. Foxwedge is by Australia’s hottest sire Fastnet Rock.

Jimmy Choux (NZ)

Thorn Park x Cierzo (Centaine)

Premier: 8           Select: 20             Festival: 9

Five-time Group 1 winner and New Zealand Horse of the Year, Jimmy Choux won multiple Group 1 races on both sides of the Tasman and ran second in the Group 1 Cox Plate behind Pinker Pinker. He is by the champion New Zealand sire Thorn Park.

Pour Moi (IRE)

Montjeu x Gwynn (Darshaan)

A Group 1 Epsom Derby winner in England for Coolmore, Pour Moi is by champion sire Montjeu. He is also a three-quarter-brother to Group 1 Irish Oaks performer Gagnoa.

Shuttled to Windsor Park Stud.

Redwood (GB)

High Chaparral x Arum Lily (Woodman)

Premier: 5           Select: 21             Festival: 12

An international Group 1 winning son of super sire High Chaparral – also the sire of NZ’s dual hemisphere champion So You Think – Redwood was the winner of the Group 1 winner in the UK and ran Group 1 seconds in both the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Vase and Dubai Sheema Classic.

Sepoy (AUS)

Elusive Quality x Watchful (Danehill)

Premier: 2                          

A brilliant Group 1 juvenile, Sepoy captured the elusive Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes and Group 1 Golden Slipper double, and trained on to win two more Group 1 sprints as a three-year-old to become Australia’s Champion 2YO & 3YO colt. The son of Elusive Quality’s first crop has already been well received in Australia.

Smart Missile (AUS)

Fastnet Rock x Comical Smile (Comic Strip)

Premier: 3           Select: 2              

Unbeaten as a two-year-old, Smart Missile won the Group 2 Todman Stakes beating Sepoy – the only horse to beat Sepoy as a two-year-old. He is by Australia’s hottest sire in Fastnet Ro from the family of Northern Meteor.

So You Think (NZ)

High Chaparral x Triassic (Tights) 

Premier: 7          

A Champion New Zealand-bred galloper, So You Think won 10 Group 1 races across both hemispheres including two Group 1 Cox Plates, earning three Champions titles. He retired as the highest rated son of High Chaparral.

Toorak Toff (AUS)

Show a Heart x Orong (Grand Lodge)

Premier: 2          

Dual Group 1 winning sprinter, Toorak Toff beat some of Australia’s best sprinters with victories in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes and the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes.

Indian Charlie x Playa Maya (Arch)

The Champion 2YO Colt in the US, Uncle Mo won two Group 1 races as a two-year-old including the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.

Dansili x Ithaca (Distant View)

A Group 2 winner as a three-year-old, the son of Dansili went on to finish second to Rip Van Winkle in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II at Royal Ascot.
