Furore Strikes Again in Jockey Club Cup
23 November 2020
Hong Kong Derby (2000m)-winning Karaka graduate Furore (Pierro) is right back at the peak of his powers, scoring back-to-back Group wins in his last two starts.
The Tony Cruz-trained gelding made a triumphant return to top form in the Group Three Sa Sa Ladies’ Purse (1800m) earlier this month, and on Sunday he added the HK$4.5m Group Two Jockey Club Cup (2000m). Bought for $210,000 at the 2016 Premier Sale, Furore has now earned more than HK$32 million (NZ$5.95 million).
Ridden on Sunday by Joao Moreira, Furore raced in third place before overhauling the leaders in the straight and scoring an emphatic win by three-quarters of a length.
Furore is now being aimed at the HK$28 million Group One Hong Kong Cup (2000m) on December 13.
“I have just done my job, which wasn’t very difficult,” Moreira said. “Good horses make jockeys’ lives much easier. I just haven’t got a word to describe the feeling of being on board such a nice horse leading up to the big day in December.
“He travelled very kind, he had the cover that we were hoping for and the pace was quite genuine. When I gave him a clear run, they started to come back and he just kept running and showing his quality.
“He ran away to win very impressively and easy. I can say that he crossed the finish line with plenty left in himself. It gets me so excited for the Hong Kong Cup.”
