Gamestonks (NZ) Strikes in Dr Lim Ah Soo Memorial Trophy
31 July 2023
Karaka graduates finished first and second in Sunday’s Dr Lim Ah Soo Memorial Trophy (1300m) at Penang, headed by an impressive all-the-way victory by Gamestonks (NZ) (Showcasing).
Passed in as a weanling at New Zealand Bloodstock’s 2017 National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale, Gamestonks has now had 20 starts for six wins, five placings and the equivalent of more than NZ$60,000 in prize-money.
Gamestonks broke sharply from the starting gates on Sunday and dominated the race from the front in the hands of jockey Clyde Leck. He kicked hard at the top of the home straight, putting a clear margin between himself and the chasing pack.
The only real threat came from Chonky Potato (NZ) (Dalghar), who produced a strong late finish and reduced the margin to little more than a length, but Gamestonks stayed out of reach and won with a bit more up his sleeve. Both Gamestonks and Chonky Potato are trained by Charles Leck.
Gamestonks was bred by Haunui Farm and began his career in New Zealand under the name Enjoy The Show, winning on debut at Pukekohe in February of 2019.
Sunday’s runner-up Chonky Potato was a $6,000 purchase from Book 2 of Karaka 2019. He has had 21 starts for four wins and eight placings, earning over $40,000 in stakes.
