Glamour Tycoon Soars To New Heights

Frequently a bridesmaid through her first few starts, Karaka graduate Glamour Tycoon (Written Tycoon) has emphatically turned a corner and become a valuable, stakes-winning filly.

Glamour Tycoon recorded her second runaway victory in a row in Saturday’s $80,000 Listed O’Learys Fillies’ Stakes (1340m) at Wanganui. It was the second win of her eight-start career and lifted her earnings to $89,360. She was bought by trainer Stephen Marsh for $220,000 from the Book 1 draft of Highline Thoroughbreds at Karaka 2022.

Glamour Tycoon went winless in her first six starts, but finished second in four of them including last season’s Listed Waikato Equine Veterinary Centre 2YO Stakes (1200m). She also finished sixth in the Group Three Gold Trail Stakes (1200m) and a close fifth in a particularly strong renewal of the Group Two Soliloquy Stakes (1400m), which went on to produce all of the first seven placegetters in last month’s Group One New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1600m).

Marsh brought Glamour Tycoon back down to maiden grade at Ruakaka on November 14, hoping for a confidence-boosting win, and the talented youngster broke through with a dominant victory by three and a half lengths.

Saturday brought a return to the black-type stage and a performance that was even more impressive.

After settling in midfield in the hands of jockey Sam Spratt, Glamour Tycoon was brought to the outside at the home turn and produced an explosive turn of foot. She bounded past six horses in the straight and swept to the lead, opening up a commanding margin of two and a half lengths.

“She had that good form out of the Soliloquy, which is probably the benchmark race for the fillies so far this season,” Marsh said. “The best fillies were all in that race.

“Going to that maiden at Ruakaka after the Soliloquy, I think she just got so much confidence from that win. She’s a different horse.

“Today she was very dominant. It was great to see her win like that, and she’s certainly a filly going places.”

Glamour Tycoon is out of Glamour Gal (Foxwedge), who is a half-sister to the Group Two Doomben Roses (2000m) winner Etana (Shamus Award).
