Gore Guineas Glory for Goldie’s Chance (NZ)
23 January 2023
New Zealand Bloodstock National Weanling Sale graduate Goldie’s Chance (NZ) (Iffraaj) added a valuable blacktype victory to her CV with a gutsy performance in Saturday’s $70,000 Listed Liquorland Gore Guineas (1335m).
Bought for $21,000 from the 2020 National Weanling Sale on Gavelhouse Plus, the chestnut filly has now earned $60,660 from a five-start career that has produced two wins, a second and a third.
Goldie’s Chance was a smart maiden winner at Riccarton in October, then finished second in a $50,000 three-year-old race during the New Zealand Cup carnival in early November. She ran fourth at Wingatui on Boxing Day before taking a big step up at Gore on Saturday.
Ridden by Terry Moseley, Goldie’s Chance sat on the outside of the front-running Bolshoi Star (Russian Revolution) before gradually overpowering that rival down the Gore straight and scoring by a long neck.
“It was no surprise, she’s a pretty smart filly,” trainer Ross Beckett said. “Robert Dennis was responsible for buying her and she is a just a beautiful filly. She has been bought as a broodmare prospect long-term and she is doing a great job.
“The owners wanted me to run the filly here. It was a great day out and terrific that everything worked out alright.”
Himself a former trainer, Robert Dennis bought the filly on behalf of Kylie Davidson.
“It is her first horse, and they have a family history in racing,” Dennis said. “She’s by Iffraaj out of a Zabeel (NZ) mare and that’s a winning combination. Two great stallions, and she fell within budget. You couldn’t breed her for the $21,000 we paid for her.”
Runner-up Bolshoi Star is also a New Zealand Bloodstock graduate, bought for just $11,000 from the 2021 National Online Yearling Sale. She has had six starts for two wins, two seconds and $26,530 in prize-money.
