Guyno Wins Mornington Cup
17 February 2011
It has been a long time between race wins but seven-year-old Guyno showed that he is far from a spent force with his performance in the A$300,000 Listed Mornington Cup (2400m) yesterday.
Trained by Lou Luciani from his Ascot base in Western Australia, Guyno (O'Reilly x River Century) had a tough trip, posted three wide with no cover in transit. Sticking with the leading pack in the final 600 metres, the son of O'Reilly refused to throw in the towel and put in a brave performance to run down Cedarberg's two length lead to win in the final stride.
Guyno has been racing in some strong company over his last few campaigns, and ran a good second to Guest Wing in the Group 2 Perth Cup at his last start on New Year's Day, a race he won in 2009. Yesterday's win has seen him take home A$180,000 and gives him automatic entry into this year's Group 1 Caulfield Cup.
In a career spanning 49 starts, Guyno has won on seven occasions, including one at Group 1 level as a three-year-old in the Group 1 Western Australian Derby, and he has earned over A$1,000,000 in stakes.
From a good family, Guyno is from the 2007 NZ Broodmare of the Year River Century (Centaine) and is a half-brother to the dual Group 1 winner Legs. River Century is a three-quarter sister to the Group 1 winner and NZB graduate Sixty Seconds and a full-sister to the Group winners Firetaine and Arletty.
Guyno was bred by Waikato Stud and is owned by DR PA Richardson, Mrs S Richardson, Mr JBW Court and Mrs HPM Court and was offered by Waikato Stud at the 2005 Karaka Premier Sale but was passed in for $40,000.
