Half-brother to Tukiyo at Karaka Select Sale

26 January 2014

Saturday’s stakes success of Tukiyo (Haradasun) in the Listed A$100,000 FDC Construction and & Fitout Nudgee Quality (1200m) has added valuable black-type to the mare’s half-brother by Makfi in this week’s Karaka Select Sale.

Catalogued at Lot 826 in the Karaka Select Sale for Monovale Farm, the colt by first season sire Makfi will go under the hammer on the second day of the Karaka Select Sale (Thursday 30 January).

Trained by former jockey Lacey Morrison, Tukiyo had not raced since finishing seventh in the Listed Tattersalls Classic at Doomben in late November but did win a barrier trial on 14 January in preparation for Saturday’s fillies and mares feature.

The daughter of Haradasun sped to the lead from barrier 2 and dictated the pace of the race from in front for apprentice rider Tegan Harrison. The four-year-old mare had to hold off the late challenge of Avaladyluck (Bradbury’s Luck) to win narrowly by a short head with a head to third placegetter Darlin’ Jules (Conatus).

“We weren’t overly confident to be honest,” stated Morrison. “We have had a few problems with her hurting herself lately so she is only at about 60% so if she was 100% I would have been very confident.

“She has got a lot of ability and we will see where it goes. Winning a Listed race when she wasn’t 100% makes me wonder what can she do?

“I was stable jockey for the trainer who first had her, I actually won her first race on her, and I have taken over his horses as he has business commitments meaning he can’t give 100% to the horses.

“There are a few fillies and mares races in Sydney in the autumn and then there are some good fillies and mares races in the spring in Melbourne. We will see how she pulls up from this race and hopefully chase some more black-type races with her.

“She will definitely get a mile. She hadn’t raced for eight weeks yesterday and was crazy fresh, she will definitely want a mile. She will also be better ridden quiet, I thought there was going to be a lot more speed in that race yesterday and I wanted her to be sitting in behind the leaders but it didn’t end up like that.”

That was the fourth win from only nine starts for Tukiyo who has earned A$157,500 for owners Mr J Dann, Miss M Robbins & Sydney Ortha Bush.

Tukiyo is out of the stakes placed Danehill mare Star of Gibraltar, a full-sister to Group 3 winner Offenbach (Danehill) and stakes placegetter Isle of Gibraltar and a half-sister to Group 1 placegetter Glowlamp (Encosta de Lago).
