Humble Pie (NZ) Impresses in New Zealand Bloodstock Three-Year-Old
6 August 2017
Saturday’s $25,000 New Zealand Bloodstock Three-Year-Old (1200m) at Riccarton could be a stepping stone towards bigger things for Humble Pie (NZ) (Sakhee’s Secret), who scored an impressive win by almost eight lengths.
Bought for $25,000 at the 2016 Festival Sale, the gelding had raced greenly when unplaced in his only previous start. Humble Pie again showed signs of inexperience on Saturday, shying away from the shadow of the big screen in the home straight, but the Adrian and Harry Bull-trained runner was never in danger of defeat. He outclassed his opposition by seven and three-quarter lengths.
“He’s always worked well and I’ve always really liked him,” winning jockey Rosie Myers said. “He’s obviously still got a bit to learn, he’s still a bit cheeky, but he had that petrol in his tank and got away with it. He cruises along pretty nicely in his races and I think he can go on with it.”
Humble Pie is trained by his co-trainer Adrian Bull in partnership with wife Robyn. He has so far earned $15,625 in prizemoney.
This 1200-metre three-year-old race was won last year by Starvoia (Starcraft), who went on to place in the Listed NZB Canterbury Belle Stakes, Gore Guineas, Dunedin Guineas, Southland Guineas and NZB Insurance Stakes.
