Hume & Linton Back to Winning Form
14 May 2012
With his Cox Plate winning son Savabeel having a highly successful weekend, New Zealand's champion sire Zabeel is also running hot in Australia with Hume (NZ) following up Zabeelionaire's Derby victory last weekend.
Now a rising nine-year-old, Hume (Zabeel x Lolette) showed that he has lost none of his zest for racing as he claimed Saturday's A$115,000 Group 3 Chairman's Stakes (2000m) at Doomben, his first victory since his Group 3 Tatt's Cup (2200m) win at Eagle Farm in June 2009.
His seventh career victory from just 32 starts, Saturday's win saw the Brian Smith trained Hume commence his race-winning run on the home turn with jockey Scott Galloway aboard, and the son of Zabeel finished to powerfully for his rivals, claiming the race by three-quarters-of-a-length.
Bred by Tim Bodle, Hamilton Stud and Tesio Bloodstock Services, Hume was purchased by Rogerson Bloodstock from Whakanui Stud at New Zealand Bloodstock's 2005 Karaka Premier Sale for $400,000.
Raced by Mr C Condon, Mrs M Condon, Mr B Condon and Mrs M Condon, Hume has won just shy of A$400,000 in stakes.
Zabeel has had a successful week in Australia with his three-year-old son Zabeelionaire (NZ) winning the Group 1 South Australian Derby last Saturday, his 42nd Group 1 winner. He is also the sire of Group 1 winner Lights of Heaven who ran a brilliant second to Shez Sinsational in the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes (1800m) last weekend on the Gold Coast.
Zabeel is the damsire of five Group 1 winners this season alone including outstanding fillies Atlantic Jewel and Silent Achiever, and the son of Sir Tristram heads both the New Zealand and Australian Broodmare Sires' Tables for the current season.
Linton wins the Group 2 Herbert |
Coming into the race fresh up, Linton (Galileo x Our Heather) enjoyed an ideal trip with jockey Steven Arnold in the saddle, keeping in touch with the leaders in transit. Rounding the field on the home turn, the son of Galileo proved too strong for the late finishing Hawks Bay (Black Hawk) winning by three-quarters-of-a-length.
Linton only had three starts in the spring, contesting the Group 2 New Zealand Bloodstock Memsie Stakes, Group 2 Dato' Tan Chin Nam Stakes and Group 1 Turnbull Stakes.
The winner of the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes (1600m) at three and the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes at four, Linton had a good Sydney Carnival at the end of last season, running second to Shocking (Street Cry) in the Group 1 Australian Cup and third to Cedarberg (Helenus) in the Group 1 BMW Stakes.
Raced by Estrela Energia, Mr M P Talty, Mr M B Talty and Mr P Talty, Linton has now won four of his 17 starts for just shy of A$900,000 in stakes.
Bred by Standard 2080 Ltd, Linton was purchased by Rogerson Bloodstock from Mark & Shelly Treweek's Lyndhurst Farm at New Zealand Bloodstock's 2008 Ready to Run Sale of Two-Year-Olds for $275,000.
Lyndhurst Farm was the leading buyer at New Zealand Bloodstock's National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale last week, purchasing two of the top four weanlings in the Sale for a total of $230,000.
