Jedibeel (NZ) Hits a New High
16 December 2024
National Weanling Sale graduate Jedibeel (NZ) (Savabeel) claimed his first black-type win in the A$200,000 Listed Racing & Sports Razor Sharp Handicap (1200m) at Randwick on Saturday, providing a notable boost to a three-quarter-sister catalogued for Book 1 of Karaka 2025.
Jedibeel was offered by breeders Waikato Stud in the 2020 National Weanling Sale on Gavelhouse Plus, where he was bought by Dengaroka Lodge for $35,000. Saturday’s Razor Sharp was the seventh win of a 17-start career that has also produced six placings and more than A$527,000 in stakes.
Saturday’s win came courtesy of a daring ride from Tyler Schiller and brilliant tactical speed from his mount. After settling in midfield for most of the sprint feature, Schiller found himself cluttered up in the straight and searching for clear air. He spotted a narrow gap and drove Jedibeel through, and the five-year-old responded with an outstanding burst of speed that carried him to a last-gasp triumph by a short head.
“He has got a great turn of foot,” Schiller said. “I thought I put him into a dead end at one point, but I was very grateful I was on a very good horse.
“He is probably better off ridden like that. He is such a genuine horse. I think his sprint is not very long, which is probably why he doesn’t get 1200 metres all the time, and especially coming up the rise at Randwick. But he has just been a really good horse for me.”
Jedibeel is trained by Brad Widdup for owners Mike Gregg and his grandson Locky Sheridan.
“That race was a hard watch until the last few strides,” Widdup admitted. “But full credit to Tyler, he knows him well, and it is great to see the horse get rewarded.
“He has got a great record. I think he is a black-type horse every day of the week, and he has proved that today.”
Jedibeel became the 149th individual stakes winner for champion Waikato Stud stallion Savabeel, who has 46 yearlings catalogued for Book 1 of Karaka 2025.
The dam of Jedibeel is the unraced Starry (NZ) (O’Reilly), who has produced five winners from six foals to race. That group is now headed by the Listed winner Jedibeel, while his full-brother Starrybeel (NZ) (Savabeel) placed in the Group Three Wellington Cup (3200m) and Waikato Cup (2400m).
The Oaks Stud will offer a three-quarter-sister to Jedibeel during Book 1 of Karaka 2025. The filly (Lot 329)is also out of Starry, while her sire is Savabeel’s Group One-winning son Noverre (NZ). Standing alongside his father at Waikato Stud, Noverre will be represented by his first crop of yearlings at Karaka 2025.
While, Seaton Park will also offer a close relation in Lot 860. A Staphanos colt out of Starry Ocean (NZ).
