Victory in last season’s Listed Tattersall’s Mile Handicap was Jetest Lad’s first win under the guidance of trainer Brian Smith. The son of Elusive City was originally trained in New Zealand by John Wheeler, where he won five races, including the Group 3 Taranaki Cup with placings in the Group 1 Railway Stakes and the Group 1 Thorndon Mile.
Jetset Lad has won four races since his permanent residency in Queensland, winning the Group 2 Brisbane Cup just two starts ago over 2200m, after a third placing in the Group 3 Premier’s Cup.
“Once a good horse, always a good horse,” commented Smith. “The Newcastle Cup is the race I have in mind for him all along. We both have a bit of age on us but he is all quality and like quality horses he is hard to beat in anything.”
Jetset Lad will head for a short spell now before preparing for his main aim, the Group 3 Newcastle Gold Cup, run over 2300m on 17 September.
Commencing the race from barrier 2 for rider Paul Hammerlsey, Jetset Lad settled midfield in fifth position. A strong pace was set by leader Tornado Miss (Snitzel) and Jetset Lad improved along the inside as the field rounded the turn for home.
Jetset Lad was one-length off Tornado Miss on straightening and burst through an opening along with Little Brown Horse (Waterford Road) as the pair fought out the finish. Jetset Lad was the strongest at the line, winning by a long head over Little Brown Horse and Epic (Stratum) in third place.
A winner of nine races, with 14 placings over his racing career to date, the seven-year-old gelding has earned A$645,177 in prizemoney for owners Mr CEJ Stewart and Mr CJW Stewart.
Bred by Stewart’s Racehorse Syndicate, the son of Elusive City was offered at the 2009 Karaka Select Sale by Goodwood Stud.
Jetset Lad is out of winning dam Jetset Lass (Jetball), a half-sister to Sky Frontier (Senor Pete), a winner of a Singapore Group 3 race. He is from the family of dual Group 1 winner Perlin (Carnegie).
Earlier in the day at Doomben, Karaka graduate Shotover River (NZ) (Savabeel) raced to victory over 2200m in The Mater Foundation Open Handicap. The son of Savabeel was purchased by Lindsay Park Racing at the 2011 Ready to Run Sale of 2YOs for NZ$85,000 from Lyndhurst Farm.
