KARAKA 2005: Record-Breaking Results
1 February 2005
Today saw New Zealand Bloodstock's Premier Sale post a record session average of NZ$137,410 - a remarkable 23% increase from the final Premier Sale average in 2004. This brings the average over the two days to NZ$134,222, 20% higher than the final Premier Sale average last year of NZ$111,955.
While Day One of the Karaka Premier Sale was dominated by the international buying bench, it was the locals who stole the show on Day Two with the top two lots being knocked down to prominent New Zealand buyers, David Ellis and Graeme Rogerson.
Te Akau principal, David Ellis, secured the top lot of the day, a colt by Danehill from Beyond the Sunset (Gone West) for NZ$1,050,000 from Pencarrow Stud (Lot 295).
Ellis commented, "I am truly thrilled to have a colt by Danehill out of Mr Prospector's most successful sire in Gone West available to race in NZ and Australia, but more importantly, to have him available to stand at stud to enable future profits from the colt's breeding to be re-invested back into our industry.
"I first saw this colt when I inspected it as a foal at Pencarrow. I went to the Gold Coast and inspected what they were offering there, and Mark Walker and I are delighted to come to Karaka and secure what we consider to be the pick of the Sale."
Ten yearlings from the final southern crop of super-sire, Danehill, have gone through the ring so far, averaging an impressive NZ$473,000.
The second top lot of the day went to trans-Tasman trainer, Graeme Rogerson, who purchased Lot 320, a colt by Giant's Causeway from Group 1 winning mare, Champagne (Zabeel) for NZ$875,000.
So far the Sale has grossed $34,763,500 for 348 lots offered, an increase of more than NZ$6 million after the same number of lots offered last year. Yesterday's NZ$90,000 median held fast today, with the clearance climbing to 83% bringing it in line with the final Premier Sale clearance rate last year.
Marketing & PR Manager, Petrea Vela, said "We are extremely happy with how the sale has gone so far. Not only has it held up to the great results we saw yesterday, but has posted a record-breaking average, with the all-important median remaining at a very strong $90,000. Particularly pleasing is just how active our local buyers have been today, securing some fantastic yearlings to keep and race here in New Zealand and Australia."
