Karaka Million Field Taking Shape

20 January 2014

The field for the Sunday’s Karaka Million is taking shape with the very last chance to earn money to get into the field before Tueday’s nomination today at Trentham.

There is one horse in today’s race eligible for the Karaka Million with Ron’s Last (NZ) (Patapan) the only horse in the race eligible for the Karaka Million Race Series. A win by the Katrina Alexander-trained horse would have it on the borderline of making the field in 14th-equal position on the Order of Entry.

The only update from the weekend was with Al Pacino (NZ) (Alamosa) securing his spot inside the top 14 horses by running third in the Group 2 $100,000 Nadeem Wakefield Challenge Stakes (1200), taking his prizemoney to $13,875 and placing him 7th on the Order of Entry.

The Karaka Million Order of Entry is headed by Jackofall (NZ) (Mastercraftsman) with $47,775 in prizemoney, ahead of Vespa (NZ) (Elusive City) on $26,650, and Way In (NZ) (Thewayyouare).

The top 14 horses in the Order of Entry are assured of a spot in the race:

Indications are that Kschessinska and It’s About You will not take their place in the field, making two spots available. The next two horses in the Order of Entry, The Bounty Hunter (NZ) (Any Suggestion) and Exalted Warrior (NZ) (O’Reilly), are both reported as not intending to start in the race but that won’t be confirmed until nominations close tomorrow.

This would mean that Staccato (NZ) (Swiss Ace), a winner last Thursday at Taranaki, will get a run in the race. The next horse on the list, Don’t Change (NZ) (Theywayouare), is an unlikely starter, making Divissima (NZ) (Mastercraftsman), an impressive debut winner at Paeroa, effectively in last starting position of 14.

Passing Shot (NZ) (Swiss Ace) is next on the Order of Entry and will be hoping for more scratchings to gain a place in the field. Coachella (NZ) (Mastercraftsman), The Red Barron (NZ) (Perfectly Ready), Palace Rock (NZ) (Fastnet Rock) and Orange Peel (Duke of Marmalade) will be hoping for more withdrawals to make the field.

Nomination for the $1m Karaka Million along with all the other races on the Karaka Million Twilight Meeting including the $100,000 Karaka 3YO Mile and the new $100,000 Karaka Stayers Cup close tomorrow (Tuesday 21 January) at midday with the fields closing at 10am on Wednesday 22 January.

The draw for the Karaka Million 2YO and the $100,000 Karaka 3YO Mile will be announced by Peter Earley and Butch Castles on Radio Trackside from 12pm on Wednesday.
