Madam Victoria Clear Leader in Southern Fillies Series

South Island fillies dominated their northern counterparts in the Listed $50,000 New Zealand Bloodstock Insurance Stakes (1600m) with Madam Victoria (NZ) (High Chaparral) cementing her position at the top of the New Zealand Bloodstock Southern Filly of the Year Series on Saturday at Riccarton.

Stablemates Madam Victoria and Silhouette Noir (Dane Shadow) ran first and second in the Listed NZB Airfreight Stakes, the second leg of the Southern Filly of the Year Series, at their last start. Six fillies trained in the North Island travelled to the mainland but the result remained the same with the stablemates once again filling the quinella.
Trained by Terri Rae and ridden by Darryl Bradley, the daughter of High Chaparral was forced to travel three-wide with cover for the majority of the journey.
Madam Victoria raced to the lead in the straight and held her stablemate Silhouette Noir at bay over the concluding stages to win by three-quarters-of-a-length with the best of the North Island fillies Porotene Park (NZ) (Thorn Park) finishing third.
“She had to overcome a bad draw and didn’t have a great trip being three-wide but it was a pretty brave win,” commented Rae. “It was fairly good company, it was a strong field with a few fillies coming down from the north.
“We were pleased with the both of them, Silhouette Noir had a bad draw and had to come from the back. They both didn’t have great draws and didn’t have to do it the easy way but they both went super again.
“As long as both horses eat up well and do everything right they will go to the Warstep Stakes. The step up to 2000m should suit them both. Madam Victoria is by High Chaparral and she settles really well, you can put her anywhere in the field and she just buttons off. The other filly has run home super at her last couple of starts so I don’t think 2000m will be a problem for either of them.”
Saturday’s win was the fourth victory from only five starts for Madam Victoria and second at Listed level. She has accumulated $72,185 in earnings for her owners B W & Mrs R A Wilson who also bred the filly.
Madam Victoria is by leading sire High Chaparral and is out of Royal Madam (Personal Escort). She is closely related to a number of talented South Island gallopers including stakes winners Nearly Pal’s (Palatable) and Bashful Lady (Imperial Guard).
The victory of the South Island-bred filly is a great advertisement for the upcoming New Zealand Bloodstock South Island Sale, with a strong catalogue of South Island-bred horses due to sell on Sunday 13 April.
Madam Victoria takes an unassailable lead in the Southern Filly of the Year Series with her victory earning her 7 points taking her to 14 points.
Silhouette Noir earned a further 3 points in the Series to take her tally to 7 points to sit alongside Orovela (NZ) (Saperavi), a win by either horse in the final leg of the Series combined with an unplaced effort by Madam Victoria could see either of them equal the leader.
Porotene Park collected 3 points for her third placing, the first points she has earned in the Series. The final leg of the Series is the Listed New Zealand Bloodstock Warstep Stakes (2000m) run this weekend – Saturday 12 April.
