Saturday’s $50,000 Listed Legacy Lodge Sprint (1200m) at Te Rapa produced a new career highlight for exciting sprinter Mascarpone (NZ) (Shooting to Win), who cost $160,000 at Karaka 2018 and also has a half-brother entered for this month’s Ready to Run Sale.

Mascarpone’s impressive defeat of a quality sprint field on Saturday was his first stakes win, and it improved his overall record to 14 starts for six wins, four placings and $143,575 in stakes.

With Shaun McKay in the saddle, Mascarpone burst out of midfield to hit the lead halfway down the home straight. While Coventina Bay (NZ) (Shamexpress) and Short Fuse (NZ) (Per Incanto) produced big finishes from a long way back in the field, Mascarpone had plenty up his sleeve and held them at bay by a length.

Mascarpone has been in impressive form this spring, winning three of his last four starts. The only defeat was a close third at Trentham on October 25.

“He missed last time out, but it was on a wet track, which he just doesn’t handle,” co-trainer Graeme Rogerson said. “He is just hopeless in the wet, but on a good track he is something else.

“I think you will see him in Melbourne in the new year for a couple of sprints over there, and then back in Australia next spring. I really think he has the makings of a good horse, and you can see that by the times he runs.”

At this month’s Ready to Run Sale, Westbury Stud will offer Mascarpone’s half-brother by Redwood, who will go through the ring as Lot 210.
