Master Fay (NZ) Maintains Perfect Record in Concorde
27 January 2024
Exciting Karaka graduate Master Fay (Deep Field) extended his unbeaten record to three-from-three with another stellar performance in Saturday’s $225,000 Group Three Brighthill Farm Concorde Handicap (1200m) at Ellerslie.
Bought by owner-trainer Chad Ormsby for $100,000 from Book 1 of Karaka 2019, Master Fay has now earned $261,944 in prize-money with the promise of much more in store.
Master Fay won all of his three trials in New Zealand in 2019 and 2020 before relocating to Hong Kong, where he won on debut by two and a half lengths at Sha Tin in January of 2021.
Soundness issues prevented him from racing again in Hong Kong, but he returned to Ormsby, who rehabilitated him to the point of returning to the races at Tauranga on January 12. He duly won, setting himself up for Saturday’s step up to stakes company.
He passed his black-type test with flying colours, trailing the leader before taking command soon after straightening for home in the hands of jockey Vinnie Colgan. He kicked clear with an impressive burst of speed, then maintained a margin of a length and a quarter over the runner-up Petrucci (I Am Invincible).
“He is a horse who we managed to secure at Karaka, and after we sold him, we followed his career up in Hong Kong,” Ormsby said.
“He could have been anything, but unfortunately he didn’t get to his best and we managed to get him back through the late Stuey Hale.
“To get him to a race like this has been a lot of hard work from a lot of people. and I was emotional before the race, let alone now.
“There are so many people to thank, but it’s just great to see what the horse can do. There is a lot ahead of him if we can hold him together.
“This was a good field, but he got in on a light weight, so we thought it was here for the taking.
“He is a day-by-day prospect, because he is not the soundest, so we will look after him. You have seen today what he can do.”
