Originally programmed to be run on 7 March at Otago Racing Club’s Wingatui meeting, the NZB Insurance Stakes was transferred to Ashburton following the abandonment of the Wingatui meeting.
Trained by Steven Woodsford, this is Miss Seton Sands first stakes victory, now with three wins from her six starts. Her last start saw her finish unplaced in the Listed Dunedin Guineas after running second in the Listed Gore Guineas.
Starting from a wide barrier, Miss Seton Sands jumped to be mid-field before being sent forward by jockey Racha Cuneen in an attempt to hunt down the leader, Starlight Angel (NZ) (Swiss Ace). The Gonski filly successfully made up ground to sit on the outside just half-a-length off Starlight Angel with 600 metres to go.
It was a two-horse battle to the finish as Starlight Angel and Miss Seton Sands fought out the final stages of the race. Miss Seton Sands proved the toughest in the straight to win by half-a-neck over Starlight Angel and Querer (NZ) (Captain Rio) finished in third position.
Friday’s victory increased Miss Seton Sands’s total winnings to $51,025 for owners Steve and Sharon Bruce.
Bred by Laceby Lodge Stud and Steve Bruce, Miss Seton Sands, sired by Gonski, is out of winning mare Whodat Cugat (King Cugat), who was stakes placed in the Listed Soliloquy Stakes.
There is a tie at the top of the Southern Filly of the Year Leaderboard with Darci’s Dream (NZ) (Darci Brahma), winner of the first leg of the Series, and Miss Seton Sands in first equal, each with 7 points. Consensus (NZ) (Postponed) and Starlight Angel are second on three points each while Cryptic (NZ) (Sahkee’s Secret) and Querer have 1 point each.
The third leg in the Series will take place on 11 April at Riccarton Park with the running of the Listed $50,000 New Zealand Bloodstock Airfreight Stakes (1600m).
