Mr Mojo Risin’ (NZ) Masters ANZAC Mile

Jomara Bloodstock’s Mr Mojo Risin’ (NZ) (Deep Field) became the 11th individual black-type winner to come out of the 2021 Ready to Run Sale at Karaka when he won Thursday’s $80,000 Listed TAB ANZAC Mile (1600m) at Otaki.

Passed in at the Ready to Run Sale with a reserve of $120,000, Mr Mojo Risin’ has now earned $192,644 from a 16-start career that has featured four wins and four placings.

He joins a stakes-winning list of 2021 Ready to Run Sale graduates that also includes Group One winners Sharp ‘N’ Smart (NZ) (Redwood) and Dunkel (NZ) (Dundeel), Group Two winners Eternal Flame (NZ) (Sacred Falls) and Nereus (NZ) (Savabeel), Group Three winners Sakura Girl (NZ) (Iffraaj) and Special Swey (Sweynesse), and Listed winners Family Ties (NZ) (Contributer), Famous Jonathn (NZ) (Deep Field), January (NZ) (Swiss Ace) and Press Charges (NZ) (Press Statement).

Mr Mojo Risin’ was quick to show black-type talent, finishing second in the Listed Wanganui Guineas (1340m) in the very first race of his career. In his third start, he chased home subsequent Group One winner Pier (NZ) (Proisir) when second in the Group Two Hawke’s Bay Guineas (1400m).

As a spring four-year-old, Mr Mojo Risin’ won at Moonee Valley in Melbourne in November, and he later made a winning return to New Zealand racing with a victory at Otaki on April 13. On Thursday he went back to the same venue and recorded the most significant win of his career to date.

Mr Mojo Risin’ was ridden by Joe Doyle and settled in a handy position in fourth beside the rail after jumping from gate three.

The leader rolled off the fence at the turn and left an opening for Mr Mojo Risin’, and Doyle drove him through to make his bid at the 250-metre mark. Mr Mojo Risin’ produced a swift turn of foot to burst to the front, then held out the strong-finishing Islington Lass (NZ) (Proisir) to win by a long neck.

“Andrew (Forsman, trainer) was pretty confident before the race, but we thought he would have had more in his favour with a little more moisture in the track,” Jomara Bloodstock’s John Carter said. “But he didn’t seem to mind and he dashed away in the closing stages.

“He was stakes-placed early on, but has needed some time to mature and that has been really beneficial. He looks a much stronger horse now.

“We will be guided by Andrew on where he goes next, but with the tracks softening here now, there will be options. He knows how to travel, as he has been back and forwards to Australia, so maybe something in Queensland or in Victoria will be a consideration as well.”

Mr Mojo Risin’ is one of six winners from eight foals to race out of La Scala (NZ) (Bahhare), who is a stakes-placed half-sister to the multiple Group One winner Final Destination (NZ) (O’Reilly).
