National Weanling & Broodmare Sale Summary

15 May 2003

2003 NATIONAL WEANLING & BROODMARE SALE

The final day of the National Weanling & Broodmare Sale saw the remaining 220 Broodmares meet with solid demand in line with the quality on offer. This brought to a close a total of 4 days of selling which was characterised by good prices for top class stock, a very pleasing clearance rate of almost 80% and plenty of great value for buyers.

With a slightly larger catalogue this year than last for broodmares, the aggregate for mares recorded an increase, while the average was down a little in comparison with last year, as the pendulum clearly swung more in favour of buyers with some excellent value for money purchases being made.

The top mares still made their good money, with this year's highest price of $150,000 surpassing last year's top lot at $130,000. The $150,000 was given during the final broodmare session today for Lot 783, Quintilla (AUS), a 4YO daughter of Danehill from Quinsigimond (GB) by Formidable. Quinsigimond is a 4 time winning half sister to Harbour Dues and is from the family of Leap Lively, Forest Flower and exciting young sire prospect High Yield. Quintilla was sold carrying a positive test to champion sire Zabeel and was purchased by Brent & Cherry Taylor of Trelawney Stud, Cambridge.

While the sale clearly could not reach the record heights of a couple of years ago, the general atmosphere was positive throughout the 3 days which translated into a very pleasing clearance rate, for such a large catalogue, at almost 80%.

Following is a summary of the key results for each section of the sale, starting with a recap of the weanling sale:
