New Zealanders Continue Dominance of Queensland Carnival
26 June 2006
New Zealand bred gallopers continued their sublime form in Queensland this Winter, with feature events again taken out by Kiwi runners at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
Cambridge Trainer, Roger James, produced La Sizeranne (Stravinsky x Tricia Ann) to win the Gr.2 Winter Stakes (1500m), in what could be the final run of her career before retiring to stud. The daughter of Stravinsky swooped out wide in the hands of Michael Rodd to upstage fellow New Zealand mare, Gee I Jane (Jahafil x Miss Distinction).
La Sizeranne, who comes from the family of Grosvenor and is owned by Jack and Mark Maronde is likely to be mated with Redoute's Choice this spring.
Meanwhile Ruakaka Trainer Donna Logan saddled up Gr.3 Tattersall's Cup (2200m) winner, Ring of Fire (Anziyan x Setchell). The promising stayer was patiently ridden by Stathi Katsidis, claiming another Kiwi galloper, Empyreal (His Royal Highness x Diphda) in the shadows of the post.
The victory by Ring of Fire in what was his first Australian start sets up a mouth-watering clash in the Caloundra Cup (2400m) with yet another promising New Zealand stayer, Sphenophyta (Groom Dancer x Ballermoss).
Logan has earmarked the Gr.1 Metropolitan Handicap (2400m) as a long range target for Ring of Fire.
Earlier in the day, talented three-year-old, Accardo (Elnadim x Princess Marengo) took out the Hardy Brothers Jewellers Hcp (1400m) in impressive fashion for Pukekohe based trainer, Russell Cameron. The son of Elnadim proved much too classy for his moderate opposition and will now return to New Zealand for a spell before an assault on the Melbourne Spring Carnival.
Miles in a League of his Own
The Peter McKenzie trained Miles (His Royal Highness x Shindiza) turned in one of the most impressive winter performances in recent years, when demolishing his opposition with an 11-length victory in the Listed Amcor Packaging Kiwifruit Cup (2200m) at Rotorua on Saturday.
Ridden by David Walsh, Miles turned in a bold front running display and had many of his rivals off the bit well before the home turn.
The victory by Miles, who is one of several exciting stayers in New Zealand this season, is yet another boost for underrated stallion, His Royal Highness.
A son of Grosvenor, His Royal Highness is based at Peter McKenzie's Strathcarron Stud in Levin.
