NZB Insurance Karaka 3YO Mile Barrier Draw

26 January 2011

The $200,000 New Zealand Bloodstock Insurance Karaka 3YO Mile barrier draw has been completed with the 18-horse field set to race on Sunday night.

Adding to the incentive race scheme for National Yearling Sales graduates, this year sees the second running of the $200,000 NZB Insurance Karaka 3YO Mile for graduates of the 2009 Sales Series. The final field is determined by NZ domestic ratings provided by New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing.

2011 Field Analysis

Stephen McKee has the biggest hand in the race with four runners, with four trainers having two runners each: John Sargent, Murray and Bjorn Baker, Jason Bridgman and Stephen Marsh.

Last year's winning sire, Waikato Stud's O'Reilly, will have another opportunity to sire the winner on Sunday with Eight Schillings and Hammer Down representing him; and Cambridge Stud's former shuttle sire Stravinsky will also have a chance to improve on the third from his son Time Keeper last year with Dreamcatcher in the field.

Over half the field (10 runners) are graduates of the Karaka Premier Sale, including three of the top five rated runners. Encosta Diablo was the most expensive purchase in the field with David Ellis going to $600,000 to secure the son of Encosta de Lago. The Select Sale will be represented by nine three-year-olds with the Festival Sale represented by three.
