The winner of the Group 1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas last season, Turn Me Loose ran an encouraging race at the start of the season in the Group 1 Hawke’s Bay Makfi Challenge Stakes before making the trip to Flemington where he was narrowly defeated by a short head in the Listed Paris Lane Stakes.
One of the first away, race-favourite Turn Me Loose was ridden from barrier 13 by leading New Zealand jockey Opie Bosson to race among the leaders in the early stages. Turn Me Loose took over as leader approaching the 1000 metres, surging two-lengths ahead of the field.
With a clear lead, Turn Me Loose kicked away to win by an explosive three-and-a-quarter-lengths over Scream Machine (Excites) who finished in second place and Garud (High Chaparral) in third.
Having had nine starts, the four-year-old entire has now won four races, three at stakes level, earning A$400,384 for his owners Mr LCR De Souza, Mr TA Hartley, Mr JR Lark, Mr D Painter, Mr PA Vawdrey, Mr SD Brown and Mr JW Robertson.
Turn Me Loose was purchased at the 2013 New Zealand Bloodstock Ready To Run Sale of 2YOs by Todd Hartley for $52,500 from Mana park.
Bred by George and Maryanne Simon of Mana Park, the son of Iffraaj is out of Danehill mare Indomintable, a three-quarter-sister to six-time winner and stakes placed Martial Art (Tiger Hill). His second dam is Kwan (Sadler’s Wells) who is a blood-sister to Group 1 winner Fairy Heights (Fairy King).
Turn Me Loose was one of three NZB Ready to Run Sale graduates to win a stakes race this weekend with Mongolian Khan (Holy Roman Emperor) winning the Group 1 Caulfield Cup on Saturday, his third Group 1 success, and Dragon Fury (NZ) (Sufficient) a winner last night in the Singapore Group 3 Saas Fee Stakes in Singapore.
