NZB’s Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale Catalogue Available Now

The catalogue for New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale can be viewed online now and will be in letterboxes next week.

A catalogue of 595 horses has been attracted consisting of 349 weanlings followed by yearlings (25), two-year-olds (8), unraced stock (6), racehorses (22), broodmares (182) and stallion shares (3).

A broad range of sires will be on offer at the National Weanling Sale with 71 sires represented. The top five leading sires in New Zealand, Savabeel (1), Darci Brahma (5), Iffraaj (10), O’Reilly (6) and Pins (9), will all be represented by their 2014 progeny.

Showcasing their first crop of foals are Azamour (6), Burgundy (4), He’s Remarkable (13), Niagara (8), Ocean Park (12), Power (4), Reliable Man (3), Rock’n’Pop (18) and Super Easy (14), all of whom stand in New Zealand. The Sale also includes two first season sires that stand in Australia, Pierro (1) and Your Song (1).

The late Champion sire, O’Reilly, will be represented by 10 broodmares in the Sale along with New Zealand’s iconic stallion Zabeel with a draft of seven broodmares. Proven broodmare sires Centaine (2), Volksraad (5), Danehill (3) and Pins (5) and more are also well represented at the Sale.

There are 61 vendors catalogued with this year’s leading National Yearling Sales Sale vendor Waikato Stud represented by the largest draft of 73 horses. Local Karaka nursery Haunui Farm has the second largest draft catalogued with 49 horses entered in the Sale.

Gordon Cunningham’s, Curraghmore Stud, the leading vendor at the National Weanling Sale for the past nine years, has 11 weanlings catalogued in the Sale.  Last year Currahmore Stud topped by the leading vendor by average and aggregate, selling 17 lots for a total of $562,400 at an average of $33,082.

NZB’s National Weanling Sale has been to the fore producing success racehorses and pinhooks in the past 12 months.

The 2015 $1m Karaka Million winner Hardline (NZ) (Showcasing) is an example of both a successful racehorse and pinhook. The colt by Showcasing was purchased by Hallmark Stud at the 2013 National Weanling Sale for $43,000 from Haunui Farm and was later purchased by Australian trainer Liam Birchley at the Karaka Select Sale in 2014 for $130,000, he then went on to win New Zealand’s richest race.

The 2013 National Weanling Sale has been the source of a number of New Zealand’s leading two-year-olds this season. Juvenile stakes performers from the Sale include Showboy (NZ) (Showcasing), winner of the Group 2 Wakefield Challenge Stakes, and Rocanto (NZ) (Per Incanto), winner of the Listed Slipper Stakes and Group 1 placed in the Group 1 Diamond Stakes and Group 1 Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes.

Last season’s Group 1 New Zealand Derby winner Puccini (NZ) (Encosta De Lago), a National Weanling Sale purchase, added a second Group 1 success this season, winning the Group 1 Thordon Mile earlier this year.

Flying the flag on the international scene has been Singapore galloper El Padrino (NZ) (Mr Nancho), a $10,000 National Weanling purchase who returned to Karaka to be bought for $56,000 at NZB’s Ready to Run Sale. El Padrino has won three stakes races since the beginning of last year in Singapore along with competing internationally. The son of Mr. Nancho won the first Asia Challenge Cup in South Korea and was an eye-catching fourth placing in the Group 1 Golden Shaheen in Dubai earlier this year.

Other stakes winners this season include Belle Miraaj (NZ) (Iffraaj), Sacred Park (NZ) (Thorn Park), Sir Andrew (NZ) (Sir Percy), Dawn Ghost (NZ) (Pyrus), Mungo Jerry (NZ) (Don Eduardo), Slice of Class (NZ) (Guillotine) and Mosse (NZ) (O’Reilly).
