4 April 2013

Catalogues for New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale (8 – 10 May) are now in the post and can be viewed online.

The National Weanling & Broodmare Sale has celebrated a landmark last 12 months, particularly with its weanling graduates garnering a reputation for the Sale of offering genuine racing prospects in addition to its already well-established reputation as a lucrative source for pinhookers.

Top level weanling graduates to win over the past 12 months include Little Bridge who won the Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot last year, and Solzhenitsyn who took the Group 1 Toorak Handicap in the spring. Hong Kong Group 1 winner Joy and Fun has also been racing at the top level and finished second in Sunday’s Group 1 Al Quoz Sprint at the Dubai World Cup meeting.

Plus with other group and stakes winners including Mosse, Solar Great, Savvy Dancer and Amberio all successful in stakes races this season, the weanling session offers genuine racing prospects that at an average price of less than NZ$12,000, representing great value, especially when compared to how well many sell a few months later as yearlings.

The line-up of sires with weanlings in the Sale adds weight to the offering with many producing current stakes winning horses and therefore holding strong commercial appeal as both racing and pinhooking prospects.

This year’s weanling session comprises 355 entries by 78 sires including a full range of local and international sires such as Darci Brahma, Encosta de Lago, Exceed and Excel, Fastnet Rock, Medaglia d’Oro, O’Reilly, Pentire, Pins, Savabeel, Starcraft, Stravinsky and Thorn Park.

Adding plenty of interest to the Sale will be progeny of the latest freshman sires including 2000 Guineas winner Makfi, triple Group 1 winner Paco Boy, Europe’s 2009 Champion 3YO miler Rip Van Winkle, Australian/Melbourne Cup winner Shocking, Per Incanto, Showcasing and Tickets.

The final day of the Sale, Friday 10 May, will feature the complete line-up of 229 broodmares. The broodmare session includes mares by a number of leading and up-and-coming broodmare sires including Centaine, Danehill, Last Tycoon, Marscay, O'Reilly, Pins, Redoute’s Choice, Stravinsky, Volksraad, Woodman and Zabeel.

Zabeel - the Champion Australian and New Zealand Broodmare Sire last season - currently heads the Australian premiership again this season with horses such as Ocean Park and It’s a Dundeel and is represented by six broodmares in the Sale.

A number of mares catalogued were covered last season by young and established sires including Alamosa, Captain Rio, Darci Brahma, Falkirk, Keeper, Mastercraftsman, Nom de Jeu, Sakhee’s Secret, Savabeel and Tavistock. The session will also offer buyers the first mares to be covered by new sires including Rosehill Guineas winner Jimmy Choux, English Derby winner Pour Moi and the Group 1 winning son of High Chaparral in Redwood.

Added to the mix is the ‘Horses-in-Training’ session for horses that have trialled, raced or breezed up for the NZB Ready to Run Sale in the current season. Targeting a gap in the auction market, this session offers a host of opportunities for those looking for a current racing proposition and each entry is accompanied by a video of its track performance on the NZB website.

Yearlings, two-year-olds, raced and unraced horses will also be on offer. Catalogues will arrive in mailboxes and from early next week and can now be viewed online.
