A winner of eight races from 24 starts, this was Pak Lok Angel’s second stakes success, having won the Listed Macau Sand Specialist Stakes two starts ago for trainer Mr Chan Chun Fai. Racing in black-type features in seven of his last eight races, he was runner-up in the Listed Macau 4YO Prelude and fourth in the Listed Macau Derby.
Commencing the race from barrier 4 in the 11-horse field, jockey Wayne Smith continued his association with Pak Lok Angel, going forward in the early stages to settle among the first four runners. As they raced past the 1000m mark, Pak Lok Angel continued tracking the rail in second position behind race-favourite Wonder Mossman (Mossman).
Pak Lok Angel gained momentum as he turned for home, picking up the lead within 200m and racing away for a two-and-a-quarter-length victory over Wonder Mossman with Luen Yat Everwin (Encosta de Lago) five-and-a-half-lengths away in third.
The five-year-old gelding has now earned M$2,344,400 in prizemoney for his owner Lee Annie Angel.
Legends Bloodstock Ltd purchased Pak Lok Angel at the 2012 Karaka Select Sale for NZ$18,000 from Te Mania Thoroughbreds.
Bred by Mrs JM & Miss R Wilding, the son of Lucky Unicorn is out of winning mare Fools Gold (Royal Academy), who is a half-sister to stakes-winner Natural Woman (Generous), winner of the Group 3 Doomben Roses Stakes.
Karaka graduates won four of the six races at Macau’s Saturday meeting, including two NZB Ready to Run Sale graduates purchased by the Macau Jockey Club at last year’s Sale, Maxi Handsome (NZ) (Shocking) and Cheerful Fish (NZ) (Fully Fledged), as well as Fantasticprivilege (NZ) (St Petersburg), a two-year-old purchase at NZB’s 2009 South Island Sale.
