Sunday’s HK$4.2m Sha Tin Vase (1200m) added some Group Three success to an outstanding run of form for Ready to Run Sale graduate Patch Of Stars (All Too Hard).

One of the highest-priced lots of the 2023 Ready to Run Sale at Karaka, Patch Of Stars was offered by Riversley Park and was bought by his owner Mr KM Yeung for $800,000. From a 17-race career, Patch Of Stars has now recorded seven wins and four placings and has banked HK$11.85m – the equivalent of NZ$2.53m.

Patch Of Stars took six starts to record his first victory in Hong Kong, breaking through over 1400 metres at Sha Tin in late April last year. From 11 appearances since then, he has added another six wins along with two seconds, a third and a fourth. Now he has taken that high-flying form on to the feature stage.

Ridden on Sunday by Karis Teetan, Patch Of Stars was fractious in the starting gates but jumped cleanly and took up a position in fifth on the rail.

The four-year-old was blocked in the early part of the home straight, but Teetan found an opening with just over 300 metres remaining. Patch Of Stars showed a swift turn of foot to dash past the pace-making Stellar Express (Zoustar) and take command at the 150-metre mark.

The Kiwi-bred runner Raging Blizzard (NZ) (Per Incanto) finished strongly from the back of the field to take it to a photo finish, but Patch Of Stars pulled out a little bit more to hold on and win.

“He was really good,” said Wing Ip-hang, the assistant to trainer Manfred Man. “The horse is super honest and the jockey rode him really well.

“The pace was good for the horse today. Previously he was struggling a bit in the back, but he had a good draw today so he performed really well.

“He’s a good horse in the morning, he relaxes well. I ride him every day and he’s been getting better and better. He’s still young, and I think he can improve. I was a little bit confident watching. I’m really happy.”

Teetan shared those sentiments.

“When I looked at the form, I thought he was going to be a nice ride in this race with the weight and with the draw (gate one),” he said. “I actually got a smooth passage today.

“He was very well through the week when I worked him, and when I pressed the button today, he responded really well. All the credit to Manfred and his team and thanks to the owners for supporting me.”

The 2026 edition of the NZB Ready to Run Sale will take place at the Karaka Sales Centre on Wednesday 18 & Thursday 19 November with Breeze Ups to be held at Te Rapa Racecourse on Monday 12 & Tuesday 13 October (tbc).
