Petty Cury Continues Hot Run for Connections

4 March 2013

The hot run for owners Matthew & Elizabeth Oram, and for breeder Westbury Stud, continued at Ellerslie on Saturday with Petty Cury (Not a Single Doubt x Bahira)taking her fourth consecutive victory in the $100,000 Group 3 Darley Plate (1200m).

Petty Curywas backed into favouritism for Saturday’s race after stringing together a hat-trick of wins, two of which were at Ellerslie, and she duly obliged punters in the Group 3 Darley Plate with a tough win under jockey Mark Du Plessis, just holding out the fast-finishing Durham Town (Falkirk) to win by a nose.

“She’s a very good mare and a genuine racehorse,” commented trainer Don Sellwood. “She has loads of ability and her form speaks for herself.

“We don’t want to rush her so we are going to give her a break. We may yet look at taking her to Queensland but in saying that, you can take a horse to Australia before they are ready for it and they don’t come back the same, so we will see how she goes and make a decision when the time comes.”

The victory brought more Group success for owners Matthew and Elizabeth Oram who race Petty Cury with Andrew Li. The Orams also share in the ownership of this season’s Group 1 NZB 1000 Guineas winner Rollout the Carpet (Holy Roman Emperor).

The win has also continued a good run of success for Westbury Stud who saw their graduate Ruud Awakening (Bernardini) win the 2013 $1 million Karaka Million and their first season sire Swiss Ace set a new record price of $125,000 for the Karaka Festival Sale earlier this year.

Petty Cury was bred and offered by Westbury Stud the 2010 Karaka Premier Sale where she was bought by Kieran Moore Bloodstock for $170,000. She has won six of her nine starts for just shy of $120,000 in stakes.

Petty Cury’s half-sister by Northern Meteor was purchased by Tony Moore at the 2013 Karaka Premier Sale from Westbury Stud for $120,000.
