Plenty of Catalogue Highlights in NZB National Weanling & Broodmare Sale

Pignan (NZ) (Staphanos), Callsign Mav (NZ) (Atlante) and Jennifer Eccles (NZ) (Rip Van Winkles) are just three recent Group One-winning examples of the calibre of weanlings that can be purchased through New Zealand Bloodstock, and the catalogue for the 2023 National Weanling & Broodmare Sale contains plenty of well-credentialled candidates to deliver further success.
Among the 183 weanlings catalogued for next month’s sale, there are 26 siblings to black-type performers, along with 19 sons or daughters of stakes-performed mares.
Notable catalogue highlights include:
- Lot 5, a Contributer filly whose half-sister Tokorangi (NZ) (Redwood) won the Group Two Waikato Guineas (2000m) and finished third behind Group One winner Atishu (NZ) (Savabeel) in Melbourne’s Group Two Matriarch Stakes (2000m).
- Lot 12, a colt by Tivaci out of the unraced mare Bad Habits (NZ) (Power). This is a pedigree page loaded with black-type. Perhaps most significantly, Bad Habits is a half-sister to the dam of this month’s Group One Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) winner Ruthless Dame (NZ) (Tavistock).
- Lot 17 is the first foal out of Belle Fascino (NZ) (Per Incanto), who won 10 races including the Group Three White Robe Lodge (1600m) and South Island Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1600m). She also placed in another six black-type races. This filly is from the first crop of multiple Group One-winning shuttle stallion Hello Youmzain.
- The Time Test filly catalogued as Lot 18 is out of the stakes-winning mare Bonaichi (Fusaichi Pegasus), who is the dam of four winners including Extra Choice (NZ) (Redoute’s Choice) at Listed level.
- Lot 21, a Tivaci filly out of a half-sister to the Group One VRC Oaks (2500m) winner Dear Demi (Dehere).
- Lot 28 is a colt by Vadamos out of an unraced half-sister to Group One winner and sire Daliapour (Sadler’s Wells), along with Group Three winner Dalampour (Shernazar).
- Lot 27, an Embellish (NZ) half-sister to Respin (NZ) (Power), who won at Listed level and is the dam of the stakes-placed two-year-old Balance Of Power (NZ) (Almanzor). Another half-sister, Dame Margo Fonteyn (NZ) (High Chaparral), placed at Group Three level.
- Lot 33 is a colt by the sire sensation Proisir out of Desert Star (NZ) (Savabeel). Herself a two-race winner, Desert Star is a three-quarter-sister to the Group One New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m) winner and exciting stallion prospect Noverre (NZ).
- Lot 39, a Contibuter colt closely related to the multiple Melbourne Group One winner Shillelagh (NZ) (Savabeel).
- The Belardo colt being offered as Lot 49 is a half-brother to Group Three winner Opalescence (NZ) (Showcasing).
- Lot 70, a Ribchester half-sister to Consensus (NZ) (Postponed), who won the Group One Zabeel Classic (2000m) at Ellerslie and the Group Two Sunline Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley.
- Lot 74, an Embellish (NZ) filly who is a half-sister to eight winners from eight foals to race, including stakes performers She’s Alight (NZ) (Tavistock) and Midnitemagicman (NZ) (Tavistock).
- Lot 77 is a Hello Youmzain half-sister to Semari (NZ) (Sebring), who won the Group Three Epona Stakes (1900m) and placed in the Group Two Chairman’s Handicap (2600m).
- A filly by Shocking, catalogued as Lot 90. She is out of the Listed winner and multiple Group One winner Mill Duckie (NZ) (Magic Ring), who is the dam of three winners including the stakes-placed Righteous Mate (NZ) (Savabeel) and High Class (NZ) (Shocking).
- Lot 99, a Per Incanto colt who is closely related to more than a dozen stakes winners, including two highly impressive Group winners in New Zealand this season – the unbeaten Group Two Matamata Breeders’ Stakes heroine Zourion (NZ) (Zoustar), and the Group Three Cuddle Stakes (1600m) winner Pearl Of Alsace (NZ) (Tavistock), who has been defeated only once in a six-start career.
- Another weanling by Per Incanto, this time a filly going through the ring as Lot 101. She is a half-sister to the Group Three winner and Group Two-placed King Louis (NZ) (Equiano).
- The Contributer filly being offered as Lot 114 is a three-quarter-sister to the Group One Randwick Guineas (1600m) winner Lion’s Roar (NZ) (Contributer).
- Lot 120, a Time Test colt out of Princess Annaliese (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy), who won at Listed level and ran fourth in the Group One New Zealand Oaks (2400m). Princess Annaliese is the dam of four winners from six foals to race, including multiple Hong Kong winners Here Comes Ted (NZ) (Per Incanto) and Dragon Fortune (NZ) (Per Incanto).
- Lot 122 is a Sweynesse filly out of an unraced half-sister to the multiple Group winner and Group One-placed Dijon Bleu (NZ) (Burgundy). Two other half-sisters, Passione (NZ) (Proisir) and Prosecco (NZ) (Stravinsky), have been stakes-placed.
- Lot 126, a Vadamos colt whose dam Queen’s Elect (Holy Roman Emperor) placed at Group Three level in Sydney and is a half-sister to the dam of Group One winner Lasqueti Spirit (Beneteau).
- Vadamos is also the sire of Lot 127, a half-sister to the Group Two performer Contagious (NZ) (Proisir).
- Lot 130 is a colt by Embellish (NZ) out of Redoute’s Princess (Redoute’s Choice), who was a winner and is a blood sister to the multiple Group One winner Samantha Miss (Redoute’s Choice).
- Lot 137 is a Proisir filly out of a three-quarter-sister to the Group One Australian Derby (2400m) winner Jon Snow (NZ) (Iffraaj).
- The Almanzor colt catalogued as Lot 150 is a half-brother to the Listed winners Alcaldesa (NZ) (Nom Du Jeu) and Lord Turbo (NZ) (Perfectly Ready). Lord Turbo also won multiple races in Hong Kong under the name Little Dragon. Another half-sister, Rapid Falls (NZ) (Sacred Falls), has been stakes-placed and won the $110,000 Karaka Cup (2200m).
- Lot 161 is a Ribchester filly out of Striker (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy), who won at Listed level and was Group One-placed. She has a perfect three-from-three record as a broodmare, including Group Three winner First Impressions (NZ) (Rip Van Winkle).
- The Group Three winner Tinkalicious (NZ) (Nadeem) is showcased by both Lot 173 and Lot 174. Her daughter by Per Incanto will be offered as Lot 173, while her half-sister by Time Test is set to go through the ring as Lot 174.
- Lot 175 is a colt by Proisir out of Tip The Wink (NZ) (Stravinsky), who won six races up to Listed level and was Group One-placed.
Meanwhile, the broodmare section of the catalogue features a high-quality selection of mares who performed up to stakes level on the racetrack or have already produced black-type progeny.
- Lot 200 is Gymnast (More Than Ready), whose three foals to race include the multiple Group Three placegetter Victorem (Shooting To Win). Gymnast is in foal to Tivaci.
- The Fastnet Rock mare Hilton Head is being offered as Lot 204. She is a half-sister to the Group One performer and sire Star Turn, and her five winners from seven foals to race include the stakes-placed Eden Roc (Star Witness). Hilton Head is in foal to Tarzino (NZ).
- Lot 211 is Kekova (NZ) (Elusive City), who won seven races including the Listed Wairarapa Breeders’ Stakes (1600m) and Great Easter Stakes (1400m). She is a half-sister to the dam of multiple Group One-winning star filly Legarto (NZ) (Proisir). Kekova has so far produced four winners from five foals to race, and she is in foal to Time Test.
- Lot 223 is Nina’s Ballerina (NZ) (Savabeel), who is a full-sister to Group One Champagne Stakes (1600m) heroine Pasadena Girl (NZ) (Savabeel). Nina’s Ballerina is in foal to Ace High.
- Lot 234 is Prospect (NZ) (Falkirk), who is a half-sister to Singapore Horse of the Year War Affair (NZ) (O’Reilly), while another half-sibling is the dam of Group One performer (Sir) Charles Road (Myboycharlie). Prospect is the dam of two winners from three foals to race, including the Listed-placed Choux In (NZ) (Jimmy Choux). Prospect is in foal to Darci Brahma (NZ).
- Lot 253 is the outstanding Xanadu (NZ) (Elusive City), who won six races including the Group One Windsor Park Plate (1600m) and New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1600m). She placed in another six Group One races and earned over $500,000 in stakes. She is the dam of two named foals, both winners.
All weanlings offered are eligible to be nominated for NZB’s lucrative Karaka Million Series. Graduates can compete for a share in the $1m DoubleTree by Hilton Karaka Million 2YO (1200m), followed by the $1m Karaka Million 3YO Classic (1600m) and $120,000 CollinsonForex Karaka Cup (2200m) for the reminder of their careers.
The National Weanling & Broodmare Sale will be held at Karaka on June 16, with selling starting at 10am.

The on-farm parades are set to take place from Friday 26 May through to Friday 2 June across the country.
Although the on-farm parade schedule is focused on weanlings, all weanlings and breeding stock are available for on-farm inspection by request.
