Plenty of Pedigree Updates for Karaka 2010

29 January 2010

Since the catalogues for the 2010 New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale Series (1-8 February) head to the printers in mid-November, it is inevitable that many of the 1621 yearlings selling at Karaka have significant pedigree updates.

General Nediym x Gemstone colt - lot 418 (7)

Lot 418, a General Nediym colt out of a half-sister to Fairygem

The latest of these came on Tuesday when Fairygem (NZ) (Viscount x Gemscay, by Maizcay) showed kiwi dominance at a middle distance when running away with the Listed Australia Day Cup in Sydney. Her first black-type win bolstered the pedigree of Lot 418, a General Nediym colt from a half-sister to Fairy Gem in the Rich Hill Stud draft.

The biggest update to date came last weekend in the Group 1 Telegraph Handicap (1200m) on Saturday when Vonusti (Ustinov) ran away with the thick end of the $1,000,0000 prize, a perfectly timed performance for his full brother, Lot 644, from the Brighthill draft.

The other Group 1 update came for Lot 791, a Perfectly Ready half-sister to Levin Classic winner Eileen Dubh (Storm Creek), a filly promising residual value being from the Soliloquy family.

Star New Zealand two-year-old Cellarmaster (Dubawi), winner of the Group 3 Eclipse Stakes, has a half-sister by Keeper at Lot 587, while Group 2 Avondale Cup winner Ginga Dude (Istidaad) has a half-sister by Mr Nancho in the Select Sale at Lot 914.

Significantly, Solid Billing took out the Group 3 Summer Cup and Galileo's Galaxy has won two in South Africa and been Group 1 Cape Guineas placed for their half-sister by O'Reilly (Lot 189).

Other post-print stakes winners also include Group 3 Eagle Technology Stakes victor Run Like Al (half-brother by King's Chapel - Lot 577) and Brisbane's Listed Mode Stakes winner Swiss Rose (half-brother by Falkirk - Lot 992).

This weekend's racing could see further pedigree updates prior to the commencement of the Sales, in particular half-siblings to runners facing the starter in the $1,000,000 Karaka Million. These include half-siblings to Big River (half-brother by O'Reilly - Lot 256), Miss Marauder (Elusive City half-sister - Lot 1608), and Irish Jewel (Storm Creek half-brother - Lot 1139).
