NZB-May-Cover-2016

The two biggest races run in New Zealand over the weekend provided timely pedigree updates for the upcoming National Weanling, Broodmare and Mixed Bloodstock Sale at Karaka.

Dual Group 1 winner Xtravagant (NZ) (Pentire) bounced back to his best form with a dominant performance in the Group 3 Cambridge Breeders’ Stakes at Te Rapa on Saturday, boosting the pedigree of a weanling in the Sale.

Catalogued at Lot 44 is an Ekraar colt out of the three-quarter sister to Xtravagant, She’s Remarkable (NZ) (Pentire).

Lot 313, a two-year-old gelding, is also from the same family as the handsome three-year-old.

Later on Saturday afternoon the high-class mare Rasa Lila (NZ) (Darci Brahma) rolled to a three-length victory in the Travis Stakes. It came a week after she was Group 1-placed in the Easter Stakes at Ellerslie.

Lot 112 in next week’s Sale is also by Darci Brahma and is out of Aterballetto (NZ) (Stravinsky), a half-sister to Rasa Lila.

Stakes-winning mare Fascination Street (NZ) (Elusive City) kicked off the day at Te Rapa with victory in the first race, providing a highlight for the weanling son of Tavistock, Lot 232, who is out of a sister to the up and coming mare.

Black-type performers feature prominently in pedigrees throughout the Sale and updates begin early in the catalogue with Lot 4 coming from the same family as Chenille (NZ) (Pentire), a highly impressive recent winner of the Listed Hawke’s Bay Gold Cup.

Lot 7 is out of a sister to the promising galloper Mackintosh (NZ) (Pins) a winner of three races, including a 1500m Handicap at Hawkesbury on Saturday for new trainer Chris Waller.

Lot 24 comes from the same family as Lucia Valentina (NZ) (Savabeel), who ran away from an elite field to win Sydney’s richest race, the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick last month.

Lots 37 and 48 are both related to the Listed Warstep Stakes winner and joint NZB Southern Filly of the Year All In Vogue (NZ) (Pins).

Lot 61 has multiple pedigree updates to his name, being a half-brother to the Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes placegetter Zasorceress (NZ) (Zabeel) and also from the same family as Group 3 Manawatu Classic winner Humidor (NZ) (Teofilo).

An even closer relative to Humidor is Lot 254, whose dam Marechal (NZ) (General Nediym) is a half-sister to the talented three-year-old.

Lot 72 comes from the same family as Howard Be Thy Name (Redoute’s Choice), who in recent weeks has won the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes and Listed Port Adelaide Guineas. Another recent Adelaide stakes performer is Listed Dequetteville Stakes winner Modern Wonder (Snitzel), who is related to Lot 279.

The Tavistock colt, Lot 78, is out of a half-sister to promising gelding Snapshot (NZ) (Stravinsky), a winner of six of his nine starts including the Team Wealleans Handicap at Te Aroha in April.

Lot 106 is a close relative to the exciting filly Astara (NZ) (Dalghar) who broke the national 1600-metre record for two-year-olds when she won the Listed Champagne Stakes at Ellerslie. The dam of Lot 106 is Apollo Treasure (Apollo), a half-sister to Astara’s granddam Meet My Sis (Prized).

Remarkably, Lot 141 is related to three recent stakes performers. Luna Rossa (NZ) (Written Tycoon) won the Group 1 Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes, The Centenary (NZ) (Mastercraftsman) won the Listed Turffontein Spook Express Handicap and Sandtop (NZ) (Henrythenavigator) finished second in the Listed Macau Derby.

Lot 151 is closely related to Old North (Lonhro), the winner of the Group 2 Tulloch Stakes.

Listed Manawatu Flying Handicap winner Mabeel (NZ) (Savabeel) is a close relative of Lot 223.

Lot 307 comes from the same family as Into The Red (Not A Single Doubt) a recent winner of the Listed Bribie Handicap in Brisbane.
