Quality Field Assembled for Karaka Cup
20 January 2021

Some of New Zealand’s standout stayers are set for a superb clash in Saturday’s $100,000 CollinsonForex Karaka Cup (2200m) at Ellerslie.
The Karaka Cup was a welcome addition to the Karaka Million Series in 2014, now following on from the $1m Karaka Million 2YO (1200m) and $1m Karaka Million 3YO Classic (1600m) as a race that graduates of New Zealand Bloodstock Sales can run in for the remainder of their careers.
The 2200-metre feature has been won by a number of quality performers, including the subsequent Group One winner Chenille (NZ) (Pentire) in 2017.
This year’s field is arguably the strongest in the history of the race. It features the Group One winners Tiptronic (NZ) (O’Reilly) and On The Rocks (NZ) (Alamosa), along with multiple Group One placegetters In A Twinkling (Fastnet Rock) and Sir Nate (NZ) (Nadeem), not to mention the defending champion Dance Card (NZ) (Savabeel) and multiple black-type performer Grand Bouquet (NZ) (Savabeel).
The Karaka Cup field features horses bought at Karaka for prices ranging from $15,000 for Firoden (NZ) (Denman) up to $600,000 for Grand Bouquet. The average price for this year’s field is $135,269.
The Karaka Cup will be run as Race 2 at Ellerslie’s huge Karaka Million meeting on Saturday, with a start time of 5:10pm.
