Quality Mix of Sires in NZB National Online Yearling Sale
27 March 2025
The 102-lot catalogue for the 2025 NZB National Online Yearling Sale on Gavelhouse Plus features the progeny of 44 different stallions, from proven big names to first-season sires and up-and-comers who are beginning to make their mark.
PROISIR

Rich Hill Stud’s Proisir is the only stallion other than Savabeel to be crowned New Zealand’s champion sire in the last decade. He claimed that title in 2022-23, when he became the first to reach $4m in progeny earnings in a New Zealand season.
Proisir stood for a service fee of $80,000 in 2024. He has sired a total of 214 winners from 350 runners, with 22 individual stakes winners including Levante (NZ), Legarto (NZ), Prowess (NZ), Waitak (NZ), Pier (NZ) and Dark Destroyer (NZ) at Group One level.
Proisir sired three of the top five highest-priced lots in Book 1 of Karaka 2025. A full-sister to Prowess fetched $1.1m, while two other fillies sold for $850,000 and $700,000 respectively. Proisir finished Karaka 2025 with an average price of $203,112 from 49 yearlings sold.
The National Online Yearling Sale features two yearlings by Proisir.
- Lot 63 is a filly out of the winning Snitzel mare White Lady, whose dam Zarita (NZ) (Pentire) won the Group One South Australian Derby (2500m), Group One Australasian Oaks (2000m), Group Two Wakeful Stakes (2000m), Group Two Stocks Stakes (1600m), Group Two Angus Armanasco Stakes (1600m) and Group Two Kewney Stakes (1600m). Zarita also placed in the Group One Myer Classic (1600m).

ALMANZOR

Almanzor has become a constant presence in showpiece staying events in both New Zealand and Australia.
The Cambridge Stud stallion boasts a total of 274 winners from 522 runners worldwide, with 23 individual black-type winners. That includes Manzoice in the Group One Victoria Derby (2500m) and Circle Of Fire in the Group One Sydney Cup (3200m).
Almanzor has dominated New Zealand’s 3200-metre staying features this season. Trav (NZ) stormed home to win this month’s $600,000 Group Two Auckland Cup, while Mehzebeen (NZ) scored a three-length runaway in the $400,000 Group Three New Zealand Cup in November.
Almanzor’s progeny have made their mark over shorter trips this summer too. Qali Al Farrasha (NZ) placed in this season’s Group One Thorndon Mile (1600m), Otaki-Maori WFA Classic (1600m) and New Zealand Stakes (2000m), having run third in the Group One New Zealand Oaks (2400m) as a three-year-old last year.
Almanzor’s yearlings averaged $151,214 at Karaka 2025 earlier this year and sold for up to $450,000. He has five yearlings catalogued for the National Online Yearling Sale
- Lot 76 is a filly out of the winning mare Bubble Rani (Dalakhani). Bubble Rani is a half-sister to the Group One performers Bubble Gift (Nathaniel), Bubble Chic (Chichicastenango) and Bubble Smart (Intello).

SUPER SETH

The rising star of Waikato Stud’s stallion roster is Super Seth, who has put himself in rare territory with the deeds of his first crop of three-year-olds in Australia this season.
Super Seth sired his first Group One winner when Feroce (NZ) took out the Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington on March 1. Just a week later, he did it again as Linebacker (NZ) landed the Randwick Guineas (1600m).
Meanwhile on home soil, Super Seth was New Zealand’s leading first-crop sire last season and heads the second-season standings in 2024-25. His two-year-old daughter La Dorada (NZ) has won the $1m Karaka Millions 2YO (1200m) and Group Two Matamata Breeders’ Stakes (1200m) in her last two starts and is the favourite for Saturday’s $550,000 Group One Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Trentham.
Super Seth has sired a total of 31 winners from his two crops of racing age. Six of them have won at stakes level – Feroce, Linebacker, La Dorada, Sethito (NZ), Poetic Champion (NZ) and Super Photon (NZ).
Lot 59 in the National Online Yearling Sale is a colt out of the unraced True Heart (More Than Ready), who is the dam of three winners from four foals to race. The pedigree page features Group One Golden Slipper (1200m) winner Forensics (Flying Spur) along with the sires Snippets and Derryn.
SHOCKING

Melbourne Cup (3200m) and Australian Cup (2000m) winner Shocking is having the best season of his long career at Rich Hill Stud, sitting in third on the New Zealand sires’ premiership with 15 winners, three stakes winners and progeny earnings of $2.49m.
The key contributor has been El Vencedor (NZ), who has strung together superb victories in the Group One Herbie Dyke Stakes (2000m), Otaki-Maori WFA Classic (1600m) and New Zealand Stakes (2000m).
Shocking achieved the rare feat of two Group One winners on a single card with his remarkable double over two very different distances at Te Rapa in February. El Vencedor’s Herbie Dyke heroics were followed up by the Australian-trained Here To Shock (NZ) in the BCD Group Sprint (1400m).
Shocking has two yearlings catalogued for the National Online Yearling Sale.
- Lot 12 is a filly out of Lady Zafira (NZ) (Iffraaj), who won five races including the Listed Pegasus Stakes (1000m). She also ran third in the Listed Rotorua Stakes (1400m) and fourth in the Group One Telegraph (1200m).
- The filly catalogued as Lot 101 is out of the unraced Proisir mare Highflying Dreams (NZ), whose dam Highflying (NZ) (Entrepreneur) won seven races headed by the Group Two City of Auckland Cup (2400m).
SATONO ALADDIN

Shocking’s associate stallion at Rich Hill Stud, Satono Aladdin, continues to produce quality progeny over a range of distances. He is the sire of 188 winners from 343 runners, with 11 individual stakes winners headed by the New Zealand Oaks (2400m) and Australian Oaks (2400m) heroine Pennyweka (NZ).
Satono Aladdin has had a new headline performer in Sydney in recent weeks. His four-year-old daughter Firestorm (NZ) won the Group Two Millie Fox Stakes (1300m) at Rosehill on February 22, then came up only a neck short of superstar three-year-old filly Lady Shenandoah (Snitzel) when a strong-finishing second in the Group One Coolmore Classic (1500m) earlier this month.
Progeny of Satono Aladdin sold for up to $525,000 at Karaka 2025 earlier this year and averaged $147,683. He also topped the Book 2 session with a filly that was knocked down to Te Akau Racing’s David Ellis for $260,000.
Satono Aladdin has five yearlings in the catalogue for the National Online Yearling Sale.
- Lot 22 is out of Morweka (NZ) (Showcasing), who won six races between 1000 and 1200 metres. Morweka’s full-sister Wekaforce (NZ) (Showcasing) was a seven-race winner including the Listed Pegasus Stakes (1000m). This filly is Morweka’s first foal.
- Lot 66 is a filly whose winning dam Akela’s Charm (NZ) (Charm Spirit) is a three-quarter-sister to the Group Two Moonee Valley Fillies’ Classic (1600m) winner Fascino (NZ) (Charm Spirit). Akela’s Charm is also a half-sister to Lady Kipling (NZ) (Savabeel), who won multiple Group races and placed in the Group One Captain Cook Stakes (1600m), Thorndon Mile (1600m), Otaki-Maori WFA (1600m) and Levin Classic (1600m).

He has returned to that Group One spotlight this month thanks to his rising star son Willydoit (NZ), who collected his fourth win from six career starts with a powerhouse performance to win the $1.25m Trackside New Zealand Derby (2400m) on Champions Day at Ellerslie.
Four of Tarzino’s progeny feature in the catalogue for the National Online Yearling Sale.
- Lot 18 is out of the Group Three Trentham Stakes (2100m) placegetter Mapmaker (NZ) (Volksraad), who is the dam of three winners from five foals to race.
- The filly catalogued as Lot 45 is the first foal out of Listed Wairarapa Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1600m) placegetter Serena (NZ) (Swiss Ace).
- Lot 94 is closely related to the multiple Group One winner and sire Castelvecchio.
DERRYN

The current season has seen Grangewilliam Stud stallion Derryn enter the top 10 on the New Zealand sires’ premiership for the first time, and the country’s standout three-year-old filly has credited him with his first Group One winner.
Leica Lucy (NZ) had seven starts for New Plymouth trainer Robbie Patterson, winning six of them. Her only defeat was by a head in her second career start, and she banked more than $1.01m for owner-breeders Peter and Heather Crofskey and their Australian co-owner Ozzie Kheir. Leica Lucy won the Group Three Eulogy Stakes (1600m), Group Three Desert Gold Stakes (1600m), Group Two David & Karyn Ellis Fillies’ Classic (2000m) and Group Two Lowland Stakes (2100m), then capped it all with a classic triumph in last Saturday’s $1m Group One New Zealand Oaks (2400m).
Derryn has shown his versatility with three other stakes winners, all over distances ranging from 1200 to 1600 metres.
The National Online Yearling Sale features two fillies by Derryn.

- Lot 99 is the first foal out of Gypsy Princess (NZ) (Mongolian Khan), whose half-sister Festivity (NZ) (I Am Invincible) won six races including the Listed Hallmark Stud Handicap (1200m). Festivity was also runner-up in the Group Three Concorde Handicap (1200m). Festivity later sold for $480,500 as a broodmare prospect on Gavelhouse Plus.
ARDROSSAN

Strong results prompted Waikato Stud to increase the service fee for Ardrossan from $6,000 in 2022 to $20,000 in 2024. The promising son of Redoute’s Choice has sired 26 winners from 62 runners so far, with six individual black-type winners – Group Two winner Yaldi (NZ), Group Three winners Beau Dazzler (NZ) and Ardalio (NZ), and Listed winners Codigo (NZ), Saltcoats (NZ) and Loch Katrine (NZ).
